About the Author

Ernie Bushmiller (1905-1982) inherited the glamour-girl Fritzi Ritz strip in 1925. But Fritzi’s niece Nancy, introduced in 1933, soon began to dominate, and in 1938 the strip officially became nancy. Bushmiller would continue to write and draw it until his death, winning the Reuben Award for best comic strip in 1976.

Bill Griffith is the artist behind the legendary weekly comic Zippy. Griffith's prolific output has been included in such publications as the Village Voice, National Lampoon, and the New Yorker. Along with Art Spiegelman, Griffith co-founded the influential anthology Arcade and is credited for coining the popular phrase, "Are we Having Fun Yet?" He currently lives in Connecticut with his wife, the cartoonist Diane Noomin.

This second volume in Fantagraphics' series of Nancy dailies picks up where the first installment ended and carries us through three more years, including 1948. Ernie Bushmiller's quirky humor and bold, stylized visual art are a match made in heaven, and it's not stretching the truth too much to claim that the strip is a marvelous minimalist romp involving language, perception and metaphysics. Really? Though at first glance Nancy might seem simple and cheesy to some, the fact is that I think the answer to that question is yes. Really.

From a quality standpoint, these volumes of Nancy comics by fantagraphics get full marks. Physically the books have nice covers with a good feel, the pages are of high quality, and the each comic is a great scan.

The amount of laughter this book will bring you if you buy it is worth any price.

This book is great, the layout is similar to volume one, which is excellent. The comic strips are in black and white. Here's hoping they continue to release new volumes in the future, maybe in color, that would be sweet. Thank you FANTAGRAPHICS!

I never really read Nancy growing up in the 1960s and '70s; i came to this through recommendations from Bill Griffith of Zippy the Pinhead fame (he also wrote the foreword) and Peteykins of Princess Sparkle Pony (google it; it's a must-read blog).

Ernie Bushmiller's illustration techniques are absolutely fantastic - his use of light / dark, line thickness, perspective, and of course the gag setups are absolutely astonishing at times. Sure, it seems a bit anachronistic, but if you're interested in commercial illustration - which I am, more than "comic" art (I'm not a comic book reader); you'll find this volume extremely interesting and a great addition to your collection.

Fantagraphics printed the book on nice paper with good quality; it oddly features no front material, other than the foreword - and only a small afterword at the back. Weird, but cool.

Nancy has always been one of my favorite comics and I'm not old enough to remember its' beginnings. These volumes are a great opportunity to see how the comic evolved. I am looking forward to more of them.
