More About the Author

Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, the illegitimate daughter of a poverty-stricken woman, Kate, whom she believed to be her older sister. She began work in service but eventually moved south to Hastings, where she met and married Tom Cookson, a local grammar-school master.

Although she was originally acclaimed as a regional writer - her novel The Round Tower won the Winifred Holtby Award for the best regional novel of 1968 - her readership quickly spread throughout the world, and her many best-selling novels established her as one of the most popular of contemporary women novelists.

After receiving an OBE in 1985, Catherine Cookson was created a Dame of the British Empire in 1993. She was appointed an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda's College, Oxford, in 1997.

For many years she lived near Newcastle upon Tyne. She died shortly before her ninety-second birthday, in June 1998.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BOOK THAT TOUCHED MY HEART, September 20, 2004

This review is from: Nancy Nutall and the Mongrel (Picture Books: Set E) (Hardcover)
I disagree with the previous nasty review. I thought this was a very sweet and touching book, and I cried after reading it. I am fifty years old and not too many books make me cry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure to own, February 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nancy Nutall and the Mongrel (Picture Books: Set E) (Hardcover)
Nancy Nutall and the Mongrel is one of several children's books written by Catherine Cookson. Though it is a short story, the book is a treasure to own as copies are few and expensive. I would prefer to own a good condition hard bound edition, but it is our of my price range. It was a major find on Amazon.com and added to my wife's collection of Cookson books. I was amazed at the offer on Amazon.com for the listing in the UK. I jumped at the offer to make my purchase immediately and waited for the treasure to arrive from across the big pond. Amazon.com has been my choice to purchase books as the prices are all within my means and delivery charges are fair, even from ten thousand miles away. Happy book hunting to you.
