From Vashon Island,
By Charon Kendrick (Vashon Island, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Paperback)
In 1981 my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Frohning, also read "Nancy and Plum" to our class. I'm not from Ohio. I lived on Vashon Island. Just like the author, Betty MacDonald! I'm sure Mrs. Frohning read it to all her third grade classes. The old hardback copy she had was well worn. It is such a well-told story, a whole class of 8-9 year olds were anxious for the time of day that Mrs. Frohning turned the lights down and read to us. Each of us could relate to the distinct personalities of Nancy and/or Plum. At a time in our adolescence when everything seemed to be exaggerated we loved their antics and the exaggerated personalities of all the characters. My kindergartener and 2nd grader are now at the age that they can appreciate it, so I was delighted when my mother put a copy in my Christmas stocking. After 20 years mom remembered that I loved the book

I am so happy this book is still in print!,
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Paperback)
I read this book as a child in 1957 and fell in love with it. I found it again at the library in 1982 and read it to my children, who also loved the book. I am thrilled to find that it is still in print. It was not until today that I realized that this is the same author that wrote "The Egg and I", another favorite of mine. I now have grandchildren and look forward to reading Nancy and Plum to them, as well.

Continuing the Tradition,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Paperback)
Nancy and Plum has been part of my family's reading tradition since I found the book at a library sale for 5 cents in the early 1960s. The story captivates and transports the reader into Nancy and Plum's world. Girls who are tomboys will cheer on Plum's bravery, and those who read books and are more gentle will love Nancy's imagination and kindness towards the other children in the orphanage. This is an engaging book that I still read to my daughter when she is sick, although she has read the book several times herself. It may not be as well known as Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, but it is our favorite book by Betty MacDonald.

Excellent for children and lovers of children's books!,

This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Paperback)
I have loved this book ever since my third grade teacher read it to us in the 1960's. It has been out of print for so many years, and I have never known why. I have read it to my fourth grade classes and it has become one of their favorites. A definite "must-read". Many may feel it out-dated or unrealistic. How refreshing to read a book without foul language, un-needed physical abuse, and to even find a happy ending. Nancy and Plum sits with my Little House, Box Car Children, and Judy Blume "Fudge" books. When is someone going to make this into a movie?

Fond Memories,
By Cassandra Baker (Hagerstown MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Library Binding)
I never had anyone read this to me. I stumbled upon it during library time at good old Woodmore Elementary in Bowie MD. I bet it's still there. I loved this book from the moment I opened it. I loved the story, the hard cover, the size of the book, the way the old brittle pages felt as I turned the pages, and even the way the old pages smelled in 1974 (the book had been out for about 20 years by then I guess). I checked it out over and over again and now I hope to read it to my 7 year old. I know she'll love it too. I'm thrilled to see it available on Amazon because you can't get it in our local library and even the used book store in town has given me the shrug. Yay Amazon.

Favorite book in 1954,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Library Binding)
This was my very favorite book when I was 10 years old and in the 4th grade. It was new then but I still love it enough that I have bought a new copy. It reminds me of my childhood.

My third grade teacher read it too!,
By PLW (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews

My third grade teacher, Mrs. Walsh read "Nancy and Plum" to my class and my two brothers classes before me. The book has stayed with me since the early 70's. It will always evoke happy memories of my teacher and those wonderful minutes spent while she read to us.I have searched for it everywhere. I am so glad to see it back in print. Did all third grade teachers read this gem or just those in Ohio?

Great Book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Hardcover)
My 2nd grade teacher was the first person to share this story with me. I heard it again on an audio tape in 3rd grade. It's such a cute story, and I'm glad to see that it's in stock. (Must run to go ask dad if I can get it!)

A memorable and heartwarming book from my childhood,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nancy and Plum (Library Binding)
I've been searching for this book for years, and am so happy it has been re-published! Nancy and Plum really captured my imagination when my teacher read it to my fourth-grade class in the mid-1960's. Later I checked it out of the school library to read again and again. The book has a magical quality. It's a little bit Orphan Annie, Little Princess, and all those Shirley Temple movies about beleaguered orphan girls with sunny attitudes rolled into one. This was one of my favorite books, and I can't wait to share it with my two girls!
