Editorial Reviews

Cadence: The American Review of Jazz & Blues, May, 1982

“ ... delightful exploration of the traditional music of Mali in general, and of the use of the balafon in particular.”

Product Description

Yaya Diallo’s album Nangapè is traditional West African healing music. Combining a variety of tempos and sounds, the effect is tantamount to a therapeutic session.

The album offers a refined performance on traditional African instruments, including the djembe, balafon, dounouba, and tama as well as the conga drum.

This 1980 recording, Nangapè, made in Canada, is the result of Yaya’s experience and influences during his youth in Mali. The album brings together the music of two distinct heritages, the flute from the nomadic Peul culture and the balafon played by the sedentary Minianka. Two tracks are exclusively drumming.

Yaya Diallo's Nangapè is suitable for easy listening or as a sitting/dancing meditation. This music is dedicated to Nangapè Koné, an elder healer, musician and sorcerer, who acted as a mentor and protector during Yaya’s childhood.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Book Is Awesome, January 15, 2012

This review is from: Nangape (Audio CD)
I wanted this CD because I was curious about the songs on it after reading the book "The Healing Drum - African Wisdom Teachings" by Yaya Diallo and Mitchell Hall. The CD is a good listen and I plan to re listen while re-reading some parts of the book. This for me is one the best books on music, drumming & African peoples impressions of living in a foreign environment
(The West).

4.0 out of 5 stars Traditional West African healing drums are his style., September 1, 2004
This review is from: Nangape (Audio CD)
Diallo plays dembe, balafon, conga, tama and dounouba and even with only Sylvan Leroux accompanying him on flute, NANGAPE proves a powerful introduction: one which elevated him to international musician status.
