Editorial Reviews

***Special Pirated Edition***Nanjing Road introduces two lovers making a horror movie set against China's economic expansion. In their movie, Jingle plays a Chinese demon known as a giangxi. The giangxi pursues a woman played by Jane throughout Shanghai.

The giangxi is a relic of ancient China. Jane plays an independent young woman who is a flanuer through modern Shanghai. The changing city is the backdrop and a character in the narrative; Jane and Jingle film in locations that encapsulate the city's evolution: a Taoist temple by day and Shaighai's trendiest shopping district, Hua Hai Lu, at night. The shifting landscape defines Jane and Jingle's relationship and power struggle in real life.

Before the film is completed, their love sours and Jingle abandons Jane and their film. Jane completes the movie on her own. As she endures the psychoanalytic torture of editing the film, she looks for clues about their failed relationship. She evokes their problems with communication and emotional awkwardness in the film, which is moody and mostly silent.

She completes the movie, obsessing over real lie and myth. Layers of narrative in Nanjing Road blur fact and fiction.

Please note: Nanjing Road Special Collectors' Pirated Edition captures the excitement of buying a pirated DVD from a peddler and rushing home to pop it in the player to see if it works. This a fully-functioning, legal DVD that mimics the look and feel of a genuine Shanghai experience.
