5.0 out of 5 stars "...The One You Need...", September 6, 2010
This review is from: Nanny McPhee [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
As I suspected "Nanny McPhee" is a delight on BLU RAY with a vastly improved picture quality that is quite beautiful at times.

The bonus features are generous too:
1. Casting The Children
2. Village Life
3. Nanny McPhee makeover
4. Deleted Scenes
5. Gag Reel
6. How Nanny McPhee Came To Be
7. Feature commentary by the Director Kirk Jones and Children

Because it's set at 2:35 aspect, when I used the Zoom feature on my Sony, it did stretch the picture a tad, but it still looked great.

Language subtitles include English (Hard Of Hearing), French, Canadian French, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Greek, Cantonese and Traditional Mandarin.

Emma Thompson's creation is part Mary Poppins, part Wicked Witch Of The East. She arrives when called for (title above) looking grotesque and fearsome (17 nannies have been dispatched by the children in varying ways since their beloved mother's passing). But Nanny McPhee is not about to be sent packing by any screaming brat. With her strange way of arriving in a room without using doors and her walking stick that seems to have magical powers, she is a force to be reckoned with. And then there's her disappearing ugliness - Nanny McPhee seems to grow prettier as the children stop being horrid and start behaving and doing good things. And on it goes to its lovely snowbound ending...

Nanny McPhee is actually an incredibly moral little tale and has a delight to it that is very hard to get right in a kid's movie. Both Colin Firth and the lovely Kelly MacDonald are superb as the well-matched couple that can't see that they were made for each other, while Emma Thompson is both funny and beautifully luminous (perhaps she's an angel working on behalf of an absent mum?). Throw in the fabulously crass Celia Imrie as a truly wicked marriage gold-digger who will see all the children sent off to an orphanage and Angela Lansbury as a bumbling, but well-meaning aunt - and it all just so works.

To sum up - as a replacement for your old DVD - or as a new purchase for the kids and adults alike - this Blu Ray reissue is recommended wholeheartedly - and it's reasonably priced online too.

A rather lovely little movie really...

NANNY MCPHEE is a delight of a film with a glorious turn by Emma Thompson as the infamous nanny. We also get a stellar cast also including the great Colin Firth as well as Angela Lansbury. This film has a heartfelt message in its center and can get uproariously silly in its well spun tale. This film is definitely made for kids but is highly recommended as well for the child in all adults. Grown ups will either squinch a little at the foils the children get into or watch with glee. Parents with kids will find this the ideal film to share and laugh together with as life's lessons are learned.

And the blu ray is the way to go. The film comes to life with a video presentation that jumps off the screen. This is a colorful, vibrant film and colors are bright and pop in spectacular clarity. Flesh tones also are superb. The picture is also very crisp and no fine detail goes unnoticed. The black/white ratio is also excellent. The superb audio presentation then brings everything together. Dialogue is strong and present and the whole speaker system comes to life with each fun filled action scene. If you've been watching the dvd viewing this blu ray will make it a brand new experience. You will be awestruck with each scene particularly the superb ending. Can't recommend this film enough for its joy, positive message and fun filled story. And the blu ray just makes it all better. Grab the kids and have a glorious family night with a blu ray that will entertain over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nanny McPhee, September 26, 2010
I had seen this movie in my local neighborhood theater and absolutely loved it. Somewhere I saw it billed/advertised as the new Mary Poppins,.I had to add this movie to my film library. It is hysterially funny. "Nanny" appears uninvited with a peculiar facial appearance which could be slightly frightening to small children. She has a cane that sends fireworks and "sparklely" lights when it smacks the floor to emphasize a point. Her purpose is to "take" unruly children and teach them 5 lessons (in her own inimitable fashion). As they learn each one, OOPSY-DAISY, I don't want to give away the fun. This movie is an absolute must see and I look forward to seeing the sequel.

This is a great movie, though not for littler children. My kids are 3 and 5 and it was a bit much for them. I had forgotten that the father was a mortician. That was a difficult one to explain. However, how can you not like a movie with Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, and Angela Lansbury? Great fun, great story, and good message. I haven't read the Nurse Matilda books, but I want to now.

It's nice to find a movie that my entire family can watch. A couple of scenes are a little "bawdy" but there is no gratuitous use of foul language to spoil it.
The product I purchased has both Blu-ray and DVD, as well as electronic copy for download. The vibrant colors of this movie work exceptionally well on the Blu-ray, and the differences are quite noticable (and favorable) when compared to the DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nanny McPhee: entertaining and educational, December 30, 2010

In a spirit of "Marry Poppins" (for its magical touch) and a bit of
the "Sound of Music" (for turning around a bunch of nasty sibligs into
a tight, loving each other, and their father, children), the "Nanny McPhee"
is a heartwarming movie for the whole family.

Blu-ray quality adds beauty to this great video.

No kids in our household, we usually watch the History channel, spike TV and action thrillers so this family fare holding our attention was a surprise. Smart, clever and visually fun with colorful images and subtle magical touches thoughout telling of the fairy tale. Charming. simply, charming.
