5.0 out of 5 stars Microscopic World, Meteoric Fun December 8, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I'll try my best to write this review after having my mind repeatedly obliterated by the dark and twisted microscopic worlds of Nano Assault. Shin'en is at it again, and they have somehow risen above their own standards by shattering the previous expectations of what the 3DS hardware can handle. The visuals in this game continually surprise me; the environments (which are actually cells, nuclei and the like but could also pass for bizarre planets) resemble the spherical worlds of Super Mario Galaxy but with more detail than should be expected from the modest 3DS. The 3D effect is implemented extremely well, but can sometimes be so strong to the point of creating ghost images of your Nanite ship. I wouldn't advise playing with the effect on if you're in a bright environment or tired, as your eyes will likely fall out of their sockets. Luckily the game still looks mesmerizing with the 3D wizardy turned off, and the very slight dips in frame-rate also disappear. There are two different types of stages. You have the most common top-down perspective where you traverse the surface of cells destroying enemies, purifying viruses and collecting DNA strands. Then there's the behind-the-ship levels (boss stages) where you fly on-rails through beautifully rendered microbic worlds that twist and turn unexpectedly and culminate in some pretty difficult (but not punishingly so) boss battles. These are my favorite stages and the auto-save feature really cuts down on the potential rage that might ensue. My only complaint is that there is no option to invert flight controls so if you're one of those people who can't fly when up actually means up, beware. The length of the single player campaign is reasonable if a little short, and boss rush mode is unlocked after completing it. There are also online leaderboards and extras to purchase with in-game currency and Play Coins (which include tracks from the game's epic techno and synth-heavy soundtrack). Overall, this is an essential game for 3DS owners who enjoy pure shoot-em-up action and brilliant graphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected! December 15, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I was looking forward to this game since I really enjoyed Nanostray 1 & 2 on DS. After seeing screenshots, and some vids on youtube, I was alittle worried. Oh, it looked like alot of fun, but different than Nanostray. After playing it for alittle bit I noticed how hard some parts were (as expected since Nanostray 1 & 2 are hard). Well, after getting use to the controls/movement (and turning the 3D down alittle) I noticed I was dying alot less and having a blast in the process. The graphics are some of the best on 3DS, and the framerate is smooth as silk. The music fits the mood of the game, and reminds me of the Metroid Prime series. The gameplay I'd describe as a mix between Super Stardust HD (PS3/PSP), Sin & Punishment (Wii) & even alittle bit of Super Mario Galaxy (Wii). [The way the screen moves when moving around a cell totally reminds me of SMG anyway (if you play it I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about)] The bosses are also alot of fun (and look cool), and you'll have to figure out the best way to take them out... or you'll die. The levels are alot of fun to repeat play, too. I'm at the end of Chapter 5, but I've been replaying the levels in Arcade mode where you can try for the high score and appear in an online leaderboard (my name is Necroticus on there), or try to beat the challenge in each stage and get coins to unlock creature info and music for the jukebox. When you beat the game you unlock Boss Rush Mode, but I haven't beat the game yet. That sounds like fun considering the bosses are alot of fun to play. The game is definitely alot of fun, better than expected, and I fully recommend to anyone looking for a challenging and fun space shooter. If you're not sure head on over to youtube and check out some gameplay vids. I hope you liked my review (I normally don't review games/items so I hope I did good).

PS: The fact that the full retail is $10 less than your typical 3DS game is nice, too. Also, they should advertise this game more. I feel like this would be a big hit among shooter fans.

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game after I seeing screen shots of gameplay footage on a gaming blog; the graphics themselves looked so detailed and impressive, I didn't really care about the gameplay, or that it came for a company not known for the quality of their games. What I most wanted was a game that made clever use of the 3D that the system has to offer, and provide me with a unique experience that did not come from Nintendo. Once I started the game, however, I was not prepared by how amazingly detailed and effective the 3D is in the game, and dare I say, the 3D might be a little too effective. I found that playing the game with the 3D slider at max created a great 3D effect, but was so powerful that I spent some time toying with the slider until I found the position that best suited my eyesight. AFter finding that, I played the game extensively, and came away reasonably impressed. If you like "bullet hell" shooters or shooting games a'la "Contra", you will definitely enjoy this game; it provides plenty of replay value, and the difficulty is almost overwhelming in certain areas. The fact that you are given three tries before you die and have to restart the level is insanely frustrating, but for the hardcore gamer in me, I pushed forward, wanting to see how much more beautiful the game could get.

If you are thinking about purchasing this title, be aware that,

a. The 3D may be a little too taxing on the eyes, so adjust the slider slightly until it does not effect it negatively;
b. The difficulty is insane and reminiscent of old school shooters, so pace yourself and remember the control scheme;
c. Enjoy the visuals, as they are some of the prettiest the 3DS has to offer.

This being my tenth 3DS game is indicative of the fact that I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a game that provides a challenge, beautiful graphics, and an impressive use of the 3D, all coming from a company other than Nintendo.
