Book Description

March 11, 2008

Nanotechnology is widely regarded as one of the twenty-first century s key technologies, and its economic importance is sharply on the rise. In architecture and the construction industry it has potentials that are already usable today, especially the coating of surfaces to lend them functional characteristics such as increased tensile strength, self-cleaning capacity, fire resistance, and others. Additives based on nanomaterials make common materials lighter, more permeable, and more resistant to wear. Nanomaterials are not only extremely useful for roofs and facades; they also expand design possibilities for interior and exterior rooms and spaces. Nano insulating materials open up new possibilities for ecologically oriented architects.

In this book, with a foreword by nobel prize winner Harold Kroto, architects, interior designers and designers will find an introduction to the scientific background specifically tailored to their needs, a critical discussion of the advantages and limits of the technology, and above all a comprehensive presentation of sixteen characteristics and functions of nanomaterials that are specially relevant for building and design, illustrated by numerous international project examples.

This review is from: Nano Materials: in Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design (Paperback)
Nanotechnology, undoubtedly, is transforming our life into higher standarts nowadays and will continually improve our life styles in many aspects.
Though there have been a lot of hype and science-fiction publications, we can reach invaluable work in written and visual media. I have read the "Nano Materials in Architecture, Interior Architecture & Design" written by Sylvia Leydecker" three times. I definitely recommend all the people interested in Nanotechnology but especially for trendy arhitects, interior designers to have a brilliant vision how existing nanomaterils can be used in these sectors.
To give you a clue what sort of titles there is in the book, I have listed some of them below.

Self Cleaning : Lotus Effect
Self Cleaning : Photo Catalysis
Easy to Clean (ETC)
Air Purifying
Anti-Fogging
Fragrance Capsules
Thermal Insulation :VIPs
Thermal Insulation :Aerogel
Temperature Regulation: PCMs
UV Protection
Solar Protection
Fire proof
Anti-graffiti
Anti-reflective
Anti-bacterial

The unique aspect of the book is that, it gives the reader brilliant examples showing real life architecture and interior design projects how nanotechnology being used in them.

I absolutely recommend all the architects, interior designers who are open the high-tech innovation and thinks nanotechnology will help to bring new values to their works
