Book Description

October 27, 2004
People from all over the United States come to Nantucket Island to celebrate Christmas in the charming Early American setting. Every year, during the week after Thanksgiving, a select number of houses--most more than 200 years old--are chosen to be on a house-tour for visiting tourists and islanders.

Leslie Linsley, renowned style and craft expert, and author of the recently published Leslie Linsleys Decoupage, is also a resident of Nantucket. In A NANTUCKET CHRISTMAS she offers ideas for Christmas trees, door decorations, mantels, and much more, all inspired by the homes of Nantucket. Also included are projects such as ornaments and stockings as well as festive recipes and inspirations for table settings and entertaining.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Nantucket, the charming little island off the coast of Massachusetts that’s reachable only by boat or plane, is primarily seen as a summer vacation spot, but this festive gift book shows that the New England town can be just as appealing when blanketed by snow as it is in the heat of summer. Linsley (Leslie Linsley’s Découpage, etc.) takes readers on a tour of the island’s exquisite 200-year-old homes at their most splendid: Christmastime. Packed with full-color photographs of the homes of the author’s friends and acquaintances, the book includes many New England touches, including snapshots of boats and ships, simple shingle residences, shop windows lit up for the season and lighthouses. The author provides adequate historical background information on the buildings, as well as tips for anyone interested in arts and crafts; projects include making a fan plaque out of greenery and citrus fruit and arranging flowers for an elegant centerpiece. Linsley also includes a recipe for a stunning Pear Almond Tart, making this more than just an attractive coffee-table book. The volume can seem repetitive, as many of the homes are decorated by the same designers and floral arrangers, resulting in an endless array of sophisticated white lights, cranberries in glass containers and red candles on the mantel. In addition, people don’t figure in any of the photographs, which is a shame; having a few festive faces, perhaps at the many parties and events Linsley mentions, would help display the holiday spirit the author is trying to convey. Still, readers who like this style of decoration will find inspiration in this book, even if it doesn’t persuade them to weather a winter in Nantucket. Photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the charm of a Christmas holiday on Nantucket!, October 25, 2004

This review is from: A Nantucket Christmas (Hardcover)
As a ardent fan of Nantucket "style" and history, I can't be more delighted that the author has compiled a book devoted to the charms of a Nantucket Christmas! The copy and beautiful color photographs share all the beauty and uniqueness of the special holiday season on this "faraway" isle. In addition to sharing the special ambiance that is Nantucket, creative ideas abound in this book for bringing a bit of a Nantucket holiday to your own home. Thank you, Leslie Linsley, for a book I will treasure for many years to come!!

4.0 out of 5 stars fine holiday gift book, November 19, 2006
This review is from: A Nantucket Christmas (Paperback)
This holiday gift book provides readers with insight into celebrating Christmas on Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts. The two centuries old houses look terrific as they are made festive for the Yuletide season. The numerous color photos by Jeffrey Allen enable the reader to see first hand why this is a popular sight during Christmas, almost as much as it is a summer getaway. Author Leslie Linsley provides a warm travelogue as she escorts her readers on a tour of the homes, the ships, the shops, all lit up for the season to be jolly. Ms. Linsley also provides the audience with arts and crafts tips that include designs using greenery, fruits and flowers. Special recipes round out this delightful charmer. Perhaps the only thing missing is the lack of the owners of these delightful homes, shops, and ships as smiling uplifting faces would enhance the insightful descriptions and wonderful photography.
