Images that are simple and beautiful.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nantucket: Seasons on the Island (Hardcover)
Cary captures parts of the island that you'll never see if you only _visit_ Nantucket. Having spent the first 18 years of my life on Nantucket (NHS '94) I can truly identify with her photos. Her photos of little known corners and landscapes bring me back to the island.

Cary is in touch with the island,

Cary Hazelgrove is the only photographer on island who has a sense of the real island! She doesn't just take "pretty" pictures like any other photo book of the Island. I can feel these images!....I hope she continues with her excellent work.

If you love Nantucket, you've got to have this book. Cary, in my opinion, is the best photographer on the island. Her photos are so beautiful that I'm transported back to Nantucket as I look through the pages of this book. Somehow she captures the full feeling of being on Nantucket and for that I'm grateful. It's a magical place and Cary's photos bring back wonderful memories every time I look at them.

Interesting balance of nature and mankind,

First, it is obvious that Cary Hazlegrove is a first-rate photographer, and these photos are the best of her work on the island.
But it would be wrong to assume that this is just a simple picture book showing pretty places. On one level, it is that of course, but there's much more to it. None of the photos have people as the primary focal point, yet few of the photos are "nature" photos. They're nearly all an ideal balance of Nantucket's natural state and man's handiwork on the island. They are restrained pictures that are neither nature worship nor boosters for tourism. In that sense, the pictures themselves both show and represent a perfect metaphor for what Nantucket actually is: a place where people have made a mark, yet a self-consciously limited one. Cary's photos offer the best way to not just see Nantucket scenes, but to fully understand the idea of Nantucket if you cannot go there.

Nantucket: Seasons on the Island,

This review is from: Nantucket: Seasons on the Island (Hardcover)
Seasons of the Island was more of an "artsy" pictorial then it was insight on the the Island. I was disappointed because I've never been to Nantucket and I was expecting to 'learn' about the Island. The pictures were beautiful but I couldn't appreciate what I was looking at because the author did nothing to describe the history or points of interest. I felt that he was trying to win a photography contest more then anything. It almost seemed that the author was trying to 'wow' the reader with his attempt at using a certain photography 'technique' rather then showing off the beauty of Nantucket. I don't know, I'm not an expert, just a girl who is fascinated with the Island and wanted to be swept off my feet from it's beauty when I opened the book but it didn't happen.
