5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Message, Wonderful Illustrations, April 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Naomi Judd's Guardian Angels (Hardcover)
The words are beautiful and introduce the idea of deceasedfamily members acting as guardian angels to a young girl. "Ahundred-year-old photograph stares out from a frame. And if you look real close you'll see our eyes are just the same. I never met them face-to-face but I still know them well from the stories my dear grandma would tell." The words are comforting, and the illustrations are beautiful. The deceased relatives can be seen faintly in the clouds, just as they would look if they were working on their farm today. As the words are song lyrics, they do repeat at the end. Young children like repetition, though, so this does not detract from the story. I recommend this book for children ages 3-6.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!, April 16, 2003
This review is from: Naomi Judd's Guardian Angels (Hardcover)
I would trust Naomi Judd if I didn't trust another person in the whole world! Her book is beautiful, her songs are beautiful, her daughters are beautiful, her life is beautiful! Thank you, Naomi! In a world where so many people are invested in "taking," you are definitely a "giver." You enrich our lives in so many ways.

This review is from: Naomi Judd's Guardian Angels (Hardcover)
This book for "all ages" is a timeless tale about our connections with our ancestors. A spin-off from a best-selling Naomi Judd song, Judd's Guardian Angels reminds us that we belong no matter where we are. The hardback book also includes a cd of the song that inspired the book.
The book begins with a forward from Naomi Judd that describes how the song and the book came to be. It is then followed by a short and simple rhyming story. The story revolves around the phrase, "And if you look real close you'll see our eyes are just the same." A young girl takes comfort in the photograph of her great-grandparents and feels a special closeness to them, even though she had never met them. She believes they're watching over her and that she is never alone because of that.
Probably one of the most charming aspects of the book are the illustrations. I may be a little biased, however, since Dan Andreasen is one of my favorite illustrators. He breathes life into characters that may otherwise seem flat and ordinary.
The beautiful watercolor paintings inside this book almost make it feel like an art gallery. Andreasen's token soft character expressions and wonderful colors make the story complete and add a sense of awe to the book.
As a whole, the book is wonderful and great to read aloud to kids and grownups alike. Its simple text allows the reader to grow on his or her own, filling in the spaces with their own personal experience. It is a true tribute to family and a great buy for the holidays.

When I saw a copy of it in my local bookstore, I thought I get that since it's such a lovely book. So, I brought that as a birthday present for a well-known person. Only one problem, though. How do you open the CD that comes with the book? Anyway, great book, so, I'll might get it for my mother when I find another copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, July 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Naomi Judd's Guardian Angels (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful book, written by an amazing woman. I was recently reading a letter printed on-line by Naomi Judd concerning her efforts in finding a cure for Hepatitis C, and she was assuring everybody that she receives no pay for her efforts, and she was talking about how important credibility is to her. The whole time I was reading the letter, I was thinking, "Why does she waste her time defending herself? Who would ever doubt this woman or care if she did get paid? Her life speaks for itself." Whatever she gets, she deserves. It doesn't even matter what she says-it's what she IS." Naomi Judd makes me think of those lines that Elton John wrote for Princess Diana-"You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart."-"Called out to our country, and whispered to those in pain...." I think that when Naomi's life is over, God will smile and say, "In this life, through good and bad, you learned love and compassion and graciousness and reached out to the world with it. Very well done." "Guardian Angels" is simply another manifestation of an incredible life of love!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can relate to this..., June 28, 2005
This review is from: Naomi Judd's Guardian Angels (Hardcover)
My dad named me for his mother who died of colon cancer several years before my birth. My birthday and her death date are only a week apart. Though I never got to know her, I've always felt that she was keeping a close eye on me. She played mom to six very mischevious children, and guardian angel to at least this grandchild. This song and the book always make me think of her.

My brother's-in-law father passed away very suddenly only a few weeks ago. He mentioned in his eulogy how much his dad loved his grandchildren, even though they are not yet conceived. An absolute truth that resonated with his wife (my sister), myself and our other two sisters who never met our grandmother, but have every assurance that she loves us.

I've bought the book for myself and for my future nieces and nephews, so they know they have guardian angels.

"Where you come from is as important as where you're going," so says and sings Naomi Judd through the eyes of a child in this charming story inspired by reflections on her great-grandparents. The book is written for children ages 4-8. The song on the companion CD is for anyone. Included in the book are beautiful paintings by Dan Andreasen which capture and enhance the quality of this gift of family love, and those special places and memories stored in the heart. It is an enchanting book, and yes, love can build a bridge across time.
