Book Description

May 1, 2005 Country & Regional Guides - Cadogan
This guide has it all: Italy's most desirable vacation destination is the subject of one of Cadogan's bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. Along with color photographs and maps, this new edition contains the most up-to-the-minute practical information and listings. Cadogan explores the home of pizza, seeking out the pleasures of chic Positano and the Amalfi Coast, where Mount Vesuvius towers over the fantasy garden frescoes of Pompeii; the ravishing landscape of Capri; and vibrant Naples, with its world-famous restaurants and nightlife. Aside from the bright lights of the islands and the coast, the guide covers the inland regions of Southern Italy casual tourists rarely see: the mountain plateaux of rugged Calabria, Puglia, with its flavors of Greece and Africa, and remote Basilicata, the province of Matera, made a World Heritage Site for its astonishing neighborhoods of cave homes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"One of our favorite travel series, Cadogan Guides are British imports with a distinct personality. Authors have lived and traveled for years in the regions they cover and bring an in-depth knowledge of local history and culture to their guides."

"Overall the top marks go to Cadogan."--BBC Radio 4 (UK)

"Amazingly well updated and researched."--The Times (UK)

From the Back Cover

The Bay of Naples has been one of the great seats of Mediterranean civilization and a melting pot of culture for over 2,000 years. Discover vibrant, anarchic Naples, one of the most densely populated cities in Europe, visit the lively resorts of Capri and Sorrento or explore the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum which lie in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. Across the Bay are the beautiful islands of Capri and Ischia while further south, stretch the glorious coasts of Amalfi and the Cilento. Whether you're after the ever-changing views across the Bay, the rugged mountains of Calabria, the mysterious cave dwellings of Basilicata, the sleepy, whitewashed villages in Puglia, or the mouth-watering regional cuisine, this completely revised edition of Cadogan's best-selling guide contains all you need to fully experience and enjoy this enchanting corner of the world.

This review is from: Bay of Naples & Southern Italy, 6th (Country & Regional Guides - Cadogan) (Paperback)
Though Naples and the Amalfi Coast are better treated, the rest of southern Italy typically receives short shrift from the writers of travel guides, probably because this lovely region is less geared toward tourism. This Cadogan guide goes a long way toward ameliorating the problem. While covering the more obvious highlights, the authors also dig and delve into the details that bring interest and a sense of intrigue to almost any given site. Wit and humor further enliven the text, which reads more like story than guide. Where else would the traveller encounter the tale of the ancient witches' sabbath on the banks of the River Sabato, or discover the most beautiful rose window in Italy, at Troia? If you are a serious traveller, don't go to southern Italy without this gem of a resource.
