This review is from: Napoleon and His British Captives (Hardcover)
This book sets out to tell the general story of British prisoners in France with emphasis on the individual stories of the most famous escapers.Michael Lewis collates information from memoirs and sources from the period and gives the reader a picture of what life was like for the p.o.w. and civilian internees. With chapters on the different prison-depots,living conditions and vagaries of the commandants,to escapes of sheer determination and pluck,Lewis appendices the book with lists of the captives and their subsequent fate.Anyone interested in the Napoleonic Wars and/or P.O.W.'s will find this book a gold-mine of information, and should uniquely and deservedly be on their bookshelf.
