In World War II the British commonly compared Napoleon to Hitler, an unjust comparison, but he has also been compared to Alexander the Great, with whom he shares qualities of youth, daring and unbridled ambition; to Julius Caesar, a soldier-politician with a similar skill as a propagandist; and to Augustus, analogous to the founder of the Roman Empire. Like all these men Napoleon had grave faults. Like them all he was a man whose achievement was on an heroic scale. This new biography will chart Napoleon's life, from Corsican boy-soldier to Emperor of the French and master of Europe. It will investigate the legend and acknowledge the legacy, which reshaped France, her system and laws, and the whole of Europe.

About the Author
Timothy Wilson-Smith is the author of the prize-winning Delacroix (1992), Napoleon and his Artists (1996), Caravaggio (1998) and Napoleon: Man of War, Man of Peace (2002). He has been a Chief Examiner at A Level for Renaissance Art, has lectured at the National Portrait Gallery and has broadcast on the BBC. The author is a master at Eaton.

Writing - A Forgotten Art,

This is a compliliation of some of the worst writing I have even seen, which seems to be leading nowhere. If there is a theme, which has yet to emerge three-quarters into the book, it is buried in sentences such as: "In one part of Northern Europe, however, little was only briefly large."Only if that sentence means something to you would I recommend buying it.

The author has an earlier book which I have entitled "Napoleon and his Artists" covering most of the same ground.I did not buy this book for the above reason and a quick browse confirmed that suspicion. Thus this book rehashes almost the same topics - Napoleon's life, his achievements especially in the artistic sphere and thru Josephine's patronage, his relations with the savants, during and after the Egyptian campaign, specific anecdotes on Vivant Denon, Jean L Gros,and of course Jacques L David. Nothing new.
