Product Description

Part shoujo (girl's) anime/manga pastiche, part dark science fiction novella.

In a bleak post-war age, genetic reproduction is cheaper & more reliable than the manufacture of standard dolls.

In certain segments of society, young men are now made & kept as slaves & pets, issued with a limited lifespan, chained in so many ways. But Meigeharen is different from the others of his 'batch', and when Zander comes into his life, he finds it harder to keep his true self a secret.

"But I am trapped, too. We are all victims of the masks we wear, the roles we play, our lives nothing more than poorly scripted parts in a play written by those with the ultimate power, the overseers, the decision makers. Every cog fits, everyone has their place, desired or not, everything runs smoothly like a well-oiled machine.

But even machines can break down."

This story is rated MA, for Mature Audiences. It contains homoerotic content, coarse language, & adult themes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical Trance, August 13, 2011
This review is from: Narcissism (soon you will be free...) (Kindle Edition)
The author's website states that one of the genres she writes in is "literary / lyrical trance." One would be hard pressed to think of a better description for Vixen's style of writing, which features beautiful prose that isn't superfluous or pretentious.

In our post-modern world that seems to be flooded with commercial fluff, Vixen Phillips's work is emotional, daring, and a breath of fresh air. "Narcissism" was a well-paced and pleasant read, wonderfully visual and descriptive, and is a great introduction to the imaginative mind that fuels the storytelling craft and talent of Vixen Phillips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical Trance, August 18, 2011
This review is from: Narcissism (soon you will be free...) (Kindle Edition)
*** NOTE FROM REVIEWER: This review was originally posted on 13 Aug 2011, and was apparently deleted a few days after. The content of this story is not mindless smut, and if my review was/is offensive in any way, I would both expect and appreciate a message from the Amazon team as to why the review is offensive such as to warrant its removal (unless of course, the removal of the first review was due to a "technical glitch"). ***

*** NOTE #2: I am unable to explain why my review now appears twice. I may be guessing wrong, but maybe my first posting and/or this eBook did experience some kind of "technical glitch." Otherwise, a review can't be posted--and appear--twice or more times on the same product. ***

More About the Author

Vixen Phillips was born in Ballarat, Australia, in 1975. Mostly, she writes, programs computers, and plays guitar and keyboards, but in former lives she's also worked as an audio engineer, in & around various media production studios, as a graphic designer, and in computer sales.

Vixen's stories have been described as dark, poetic, beautiful & depressing. The focus rests on the baring of a character's essence and personal mythos, usually from a very claustrophobic, intimate viewpoint. Above everything else, her writing is all about entering a character's mind and unravelling their madnesses, their dreams, and their passions.

Trapdoor is her first novel, but she has also released a novella, Narcissism, and is working on a new dark steampunk work of fiction, The Amorpheum Key, due in late 2011/early 2012.
