Book Description

The therepeutic task, with these patients, necessitates a special form of attunement and a particular treatment stance that take into account the often hidden sensitivities and painful feelings that lie beneath the surface for both child and parent. An understanding of these narcissistic vulnerabilities better informs the treatment and helps to modulate the countertransference feelings that alomst always arise.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A conceptual emphasis is matched by a clinical one in an altogether readable and valuable collection that brings together a wide range of quality papers on the broad theme of narcissistic pathology and its treatment in children and adolescents. (Fred Pine, Ph.D. )

Outstanding in its range, this book contributes to our understanding of children who often work strenuously to defeat those who attempt to alleviate their suffering. It is an important addition to the current literature on narcissism because it extends contemporary theoretical and developmental perspectives into the world of working with children and apprehending their inner lives as well as the contexts in which they live. (Bergman, Anni, Ph.D. )

Such detailed, thorough, and reflective accounts of psychoanalytic child treatment are hard to come by and will be prized by all teachers in the field. As a contribution to the current discourse on how narcissistic disorders are shaped by trauma, they will be relevatory even for those who work only with adults. The individual authors concur impressively in understanding children's cruel play and provocative attitudes in terms of the disruptions and distortions of early attachments and the regulation of mutuality, not just the regulation of attention or conduct. The therapists' struggles to stay honestly engaged in the face of these patients' subtle but long-enduring contempt will speak to everyone who works with children who have been hurt into not asking for help. (Elsa First, M.A. )

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is for professionals only, September 10, 2005
This review is from: Narcissistic Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Diagnosis and Treatment (Hardcover)
I was highly disappointed as this book was really written for professionals only (psychiatrists - therapists). I am an educated person, and I still found this not user friendly. I plan to give it to the child psychologist I am working with and hope to find something else more useful.

Come into this century please! What a waste of money. I really thought/hoped I would get some treatment recommendations for a narcissistic child in therapy. There was nothing useful in this book, not even her diatribal defense of psychoanalysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gave us, as grandparents of a diagnosed NPD grandaughter, a better undertanding., May 9, 2010

Bought the book as a used and as such, prior owners shared side comments of releveant paragraphs...thanks to them for their review of relevant issues. As grandparents of a diagnosed NPD grandaughter, we have a better perception and understanding of the symptom. By the grace of our God and through her therapists the prognosis for younger persons with NPD is hopeful to the extent that the disturbances relect a simple lack of life experiences.
The cause of NPD is complex. In our early generation, we did not have the mass media's preoccupation with the "life and styles of the rich and famous", but had those of rather ordinary or average people; again, the weakening of churches that tradionally helped children to see themselves as members of a community rather than as isolated individuals is disturbing.
