Editorial Reviews

Steve Kilbey is the lead singer, bassist and main lyricist for Australia's legendary band The Church. As well as this he has been one of the most prolific songwriters of the last twenty years. His own creative tally outside of the band includes six solo albums and numerous collaborative projects and production credits.

For the first time ever, we have put together a collection of Steve's 6 official solo albums: Earthed, Unearthed, The Slow Crack, Remindlessness, Narcosis and Dabble in one limited edition box set. All albums have been digitally remastered, some contain extra tracks, they are all available in special slip sleeve (vinyl type) packaging and the box set will contain a large book of liner notes, artwork and tidbits on the albums that is only available in the limited box set.

After SK's first few releases his style and sound began to change in the same direction as did his bands sound (The Church). This release has the same undertones as The Church's Sometime Anywhere. An almost spooky yet beautiful style of mellow alternative is at work on this release. Tracks like Somna and Fall in love are just plain different, there are no other recording artist pushing this envelope except maybe Radiohead. If your a fan of Radioheads Amnesiac you might appreciate this, otherwise i would recommend this CD to anyone who liked the Church's releases Sometime Anywhere & Magician among the Spirits.

"Somna," "The Egyptian," and "English Kiss" are my favs. This is probably not the best Church release, but it is the missing link between 80's and 90's Church. Kilbey is always the most cerebral writer in the Church. The lyrics are intriguing and the music is daring. Sure wish he would release more albums.

Steve Kilbey has always been recognized for his solo projects just due to the fact that his voice and musical taste and crafting stands out, the other Church members as well, to anybody who has listened to The Church with even a semi close ear. SK's solo albums have really stood there own ground with the magical wash that he is so famous and adored for. Not many lyrical explanations to be given very easily, a lot of instruments played like a one man band moving from track to track, and the sense of a more personal-adventurous-splatter painting that only solo works can own with that up-in-the-air-and-caught-up-in-the-moment signature. The "Narcosis" EP is the most enjoyable for me to listen to out of all the releases SK has spun. Don't get me wrong, "Dabble", "Painkiller", and "Remindlessness" are all very outstanding pieces of music but for some strange reason I grab for the "Narcosis" EP even instead of the CD of the same name with "Plus More" added. I think that the EP sounds fantastic from alpha to omega as is. I never hear it the same way twice. My favorite track is "Sleep With Me" and is set right in the middle of the other 4 songs. I suppose if you are just now getting to SK's solo pieces then you are aware of the voice. Now you have the chance to hear and hopefully enjoy that portion of the The Church's musical compositions that comes from the imagination of Steve. I highly would advise picking up every project SK has done!LOL. In conclusion, this EP is gorgious! Remember, you only get to hear a song, or album/ep, just once for the first time! Post Script: I'm better at listening to music than I am at spelling or grammer...sorry if this review wasn't helpful, I was only trying to skip a stone from the coastline to the center of an oceon.;-]
