About the Author

Masashi Kishimoto made his debut in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999 with Naruto, Naruto became a big hit with both boys and girls. Kishimoto added a modern flavor to the ancient world of Japanese ninja to make it a popular novel. It will become an anime series airing on Japanese networks this fall. More About the Author

Author/artist Masashi Kishimoto was born in 1974 in rural Okayama Prefecture, Japan. After spending time in art college, he won the Hop Step Award for new manga artists with his manga Karakuri ("Mechanism"). Kishimoto decided to base his next story on traditional Japanese culture. His first version of Naruto, drawn in 1997, was a one-shot story about fox spirits; his final version, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, quickly became the most popular ninja manga in Japan.

The first half of Volume 27 covers the end of Part One of Naruto. We catch up on all the ninja's that took part in the Sasuke Retrieval mission, and we find out what all our favourite ninja's plan to do over the 2 and a half years before the timeskip. Then Part One ends with a chilling image of what is to come in part two.

The second half, however is what makes this book unique. It covers the story of how Kakashi got his Sharingan. A heartbreaking and yet deep insight into how Kakashi's personality was shaped to be what it is now. Any Kakashi fans will adore this story, however all Naruto fans will find the story enjoyable.

2 Thumbs up and a high reccommendation for people that have read the previous 26 books. Though I wouldn't reccommend anyone to start on Book 27 as it's the book following a huge climax.

My family loves Naruto. We have watched every episode up to the point where Hidan and his partner (forgot his name) go after the two-tail cat demon and have most of the DVD sets. We have aleady bought and are waiting on DVD Set 7 now. But, there is no episode that tells the story of Kakashi's sharingan eye, that I know of. Volume 27 does just that. My kids have a few of the manga volumes. But, this one tells what hasn't been shown in any of the animated episodes. It is a great read if you like Naruto and want to know more about Kakashi. We would like to see this volume become an animated movie like the lost story of the waterfall village, which we already have.

Also, my daughter has trouble reading and I would have problems getting her to read; but because of her interest in Narurto and her crush on Sasuke, she looks forward to reading the mangas and has been reading them religiously on her own. Thank you, Naruto.

All in all, this book actually contains my favorite story in Naruto, the Kakashi Gaiden backstory. I've read it many times online, and seen the episode in Japanese with subs just as much. Finally I decided it might be nice to actually just have the manga on hand, so I came on here and bought it. Horribly disappointed with the translation and dialogue. It's super cheesy and incorrectly translated, doesn't convey the message or story well, and sometimes isn't even gramatically correct. Any fan of Naruto can tell you the famous quote that Obito tells Kakashi in these chapters. "Those who break the rules and regulations are known as scum, but those who abandon their friends are even worse than scum!" Now, it might vary a bit depending on whether or not you use scum or trash, or friends or comarades, but most translations come out generally pretty close (I've seen it in English and Spanish). BUT, here, I kid you not, it's written like this. "Those who violate the rules and fail to follow orders are lower than garbage, but those who do not care for and support their fellows are even lower than that!" Fellows? Really? Who in the world thought "fellows" was a good choice? Because we definitely talk like that nowadays. Likewise, in the anime and all online translations, it has Obito listed as saying, "You and I have been like oil and water from the start." However, here, he simply says "Fine. You and I won't ever agree anyway." How can you go from the former to the later? Not to mention Sensei is switched out for Master (which makes it even more corny sounding). These are only just a few examples of many. For those of you who don't like the English Dub, Shounen Jump's translation is sadly no less corny and just plain awkward. Artwork is still awesome to look at though.
