This stuff just plain works. Generic available at CVS as of Nov 2009,
This review is from: NasalCrom Allergy Prevention Nasal Spray, 0.88-Ounce Spray Bottles (Pack of 2) (Health and Beauty)
For the most part, my alergies are sporadic and only show up every couple of years. When it does hit, though, I used to miserable for weeks, and no over the counter med helped significantly. Then I discovered this little miracle in a bottle. Nasalcrom puts a stop to the sneezing and runny nose syndrome.
If I let myself get into "allergy mode" I have to use the spray every couple of hours for the first day, to keep the symptoms under control. But once I get through about 18-24 hours, Nasalcrom pretty much eliminates all allergy symptoms, and I just have to use it 2 or three times a day for several days, then after a week, I get down to 1 or 2 times per day. Then eventually, I stop using it and I'm fine for a long time. This last time, I went probably a good 2 or 3 years with no alergy symptoms, but then it came back with a vengeance this month. I was horrified to find that Nasalcrom had dissappeared from the stores. Walgreens, CVS, WalMart... I couldn't find Nasalcrom anywhere. I did find it here on Amazon, but I couldn't wait days to receive a shipment. I finally found out that CVS has a generic version called "Cromolyn Sodium Nasal Solution USP." I tried it and it does work just as well as Nasalcrom. So for anyone out there who needs relief immediately, and can't find Nasalcrom locally, CVS has the solution, at least for now.

It sounds crazy, but...,
By Jody "Jody" (Fort Collins, CO United States) - See all my reviews I started using NasalCrom 3 or 4 years ago during yet another miserable allergy season. The instructions said to begin use two weeks prior to the onset of the season. Good grief! Who can predict that!?! Anyway... I just started using it because I felt so miserable. Now, three years later, I have rare need of it. During what used to be my allergy seasons, I occasionally feel a little stuffy. Time for Nasalcrom! One dose in each nostril and I'm good for another few weeks. Or now, maybe, good until next year! There are no dopey or buzzy side effects. What a treat THAT is! If it didn't sound crazy, I'd say that my allergies have been cured by using NasalCrom. I LOVE this stuff!!!!

prevent allergy symtoms before they start,

If used consistantly this product can prevent many allergy symptoms. I am prone to sinus infections due to having my nose broken when I was 14 and I have prevented many sinus infections just by using this product and a decongestant (regular sudafed or generic version of the same) The secret is to make using this product part of your daily routine, in the morning as you start your day, in the evening when you get home and right before bed. I have recommended this product to friends that could not find relief for their allergy symtoms and they were amazed at what a difference this product made for them.

Just wanted to add my glowing recommendation. I've tried everything, like everyone else here, and for me the only thing that has worked at all is the saline sinus rinse, but the relief is temporary. I've only been using Nasalcrom for a month, but the beginning of spring is usually one of the worst times. I've been able to take walks outside instead of being inside and cranky in a stuffed-up aching head fog. I can sleep with the window open! And no side effects except maybe a little dryness, which seems to be alleviated by staying hydrated. We'll see if it keeps working, but so far, so good.

In 1998 Nasalcrom was prescription only. I first discovered it when my daughter was having problems with seasonal allergies which were causing her to have chronic ear infections. She wasn't even 2 at the time so she was limited as to medications. There was nothing over-the-counter beyond Benadryl and she was limited to Zyrtec for prescription medications, neither of which worked well enough for her. So her pediatrician prescribed Nasalcrom combined with Zyrtec. Once it kicked in (it can take up to 2 weeks of daily use, at least 3 times per day) her allergy symptoms were gone and she never had another ear infection.
We've been using it ever since for our two older daughters when their seasonal allergies flare and I've used it on occasion as well. They both develop bad coughs due to post nasal drip as well as stuffy/runny noses. Nasalcrom takes care of the cough because it clears up their the nasal symptoms. I don't have to worry about side effects. Neither of them have experienced nasal dryness with it. It's a much better alternative in my opinion to prescription steroid sprays. I love that it's over-the-counter and safe. I read that it's made from the extract of the Egyptian carrot. It stabilizes the mast cells inside the nose that react to allergens. For some reason I can't find it in local stores anymore, so I started buying it on amazon. It is a little more expensive than what I have paid for it in the store, but it's worth it.

Great allergy "preventative maintenance" product,

I've had problems with sinusitis all my life and I live in an area known for seasonal allergens. Using this product has taken a lot of the day-to-day pain out of things. It has allowed me to cut way back on nasal steroid use from daily (which was causing nosebleeds) to about twice a week.
As the literature accompanying it mentions, it is not an antihistamine; it prevents histamine formation. Because of that, you want to use it regularly, or at least before you encounter an allergen. On the other hand, it doesn't interact with other drugs, so you can use this as a preventative and still use other drugs as needed. (You may also need antihistamines for itchy eyes since this is a nose-only med. Likewise, while it seems to reduce my need for an asthma inhaler to some extent it hasn't eliminated it.)

Great product that more people with seasonal allergies like mine should know about and use faithfully!
I remember reading about this years ago when I first started coming down with serious seasonal allergies after moving to Phoenix. It was only available then by prescription, for some crazy reason, yet according to the Physician's Desk Reference book, it had virtually NO side effects, especially compared to all the killer drugs I had been taking. After I moved back to PHX after a 13 year absence I was happy to find it over the counter and it's made a HUGE difference for me. No more drugs!! The thing to remember with this product, if you have "seasonal allergies" like me, is to start using it a week or two BEFORE your allegens start showing up (if you've ever been tested, you know what they are, and a site like [...] will show you the current levels at your location). Then just keep using it til your season is over. I use it March-June. If you've already gotten to the point where you've got a serious case of congestion, it may be too late til next season. Just remember it next year!

I purchased NasalCrom spray as a alternative to using an Oxymetazoline nasal spray (Afrin). I have night time allergies and congestion -- when I lay down for bed, I need a spray of Afrin in one or both nostrils. I was concerned that my long term use of Afrin could be causing "rebound congestion" because I use it almost everyday. I started using the NasalCrom four times a day (also with Zyrtec) and tried to go to sleep without depending on Afrin.
The first night I was able to make it through the night without Afrin, but did have to use the Naselcrom in both nostrils in the middle of the night. I've been using it for five days now, and it appears to be improving each day. At night, I'm able to sleep, but should note don't expect 100% free nasal congestion. To me it feels 80-90% clear, but that's OK because I can sleep without Afrin! I expect the effectiveness to improve in the next couple weeks as the directions suggest. I will continue to buy this product, but will probably try the generic version (look for: cromolyn sodium nasal solution) next. |
