Book Description

August 30, 2003
Now, for the first time, a new book from David Bull Publishing reveals the essential role that women play in NASCAR-both behind the scenes and in high-profile positions with racing teams, the media, and the NASCAR organization itself. The book is illustrated with over 100 color and black and white photographs, most provided from family photo albums.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Though too few racing fans realize it, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series wouldn't be possible without the participation of a remarkable range of women. In NASCAR Women: At the Heart of Racing, author Denise Wood profiles a cross-section of women-from drivers' wives to top executives and team owners-who have been instrumental in making NASCAR America's biggest spectator sport. Wood, who played her own part as a racing journalist and team P.R. executive, tells the stories of 13 of NASCAR's most notable women. Among them:

* Stevie Waltrip, wife of three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip, who fought to allow women into garages so they could support their husbands with timing, scoring, and fuel economy calculations.
* Deb Williams, one of NASCAR's first and most widely read female reporters
* Lesa France Kennedy, president of International Speedway Corporation, which owns and operates Daytona and 11 other NASCAR tracks.
* Gail Davis, who, with her husband, Bill, established a successful trucking company before starting their own teams in NASCAR's Busch and Winston Cup Series.

While each woman's story is unique, they all share a common theme-the struggle to win a position in a uniquely competitive environment that, until recently, was overwhelmingly dominated by men. NASCAR Women: At the Heart of Racing offers revealing insights and anecdotes about the sport and business of stock car racing, told through the voices of its unsung heroines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes - A great overview!, November 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Nascar Women: At the Heart of Racing (Paperback)
I've been a NASCAR fan for years and know there are many other women like me who will enjoy reading this book about the important roles women now play in the racing world. And, not just as driver's wives. However, the insight into the lifestyles of those married to drivers is fascinating. From Katie Kenseth to Stevie Waltrip the old guard and the new "young guns" of the sport are all represented. The family photos included are a great punctuation in each of the stories of these women who really opened up to the author about intimate family details. If your're already a racing fan you are definitely gonna love it, and if you aren't, you will be after reading this book. It's not just about the guys anymore - even at NASCAR!

This review is from: Nascar Women: At the Heart of Racing (Paperback)
I bought this book as a gift and happened to start glancing through it and couldn't stop! The pictures are great and this is a book about remarkable women who happen to be involved in racing. This is not just for race fans, this book is for anyone who loves to read about remarkable and interesting people. These are wonderfully written profiles and the author lets the women tell the story.
