Book Description

September 1, 2001
Imagine his surprise. Payne McCarty hears country music sensation, Rusti King, singing a song he wrote on an Austin, Texas, radio station. But now, Sure-Star Publishing denies any knowledge of ever receiving his song.

Payne and his best freind, Skeeter, travel to Nashville to get "what's due him." But Roger Durwood, the unscrupulous publisher, is prepared for anything, even murder. Payne's first trip to Nashville lands him in the Davidson County Jail. Ten days for assault.

Returning to Texas, Payne and Skeeter are faced with enough predicaments to keep their minds off Nashville for awhile. Skeeter has crossed Red Phillips, the local drug dealer and bookie, over a racehorse. A flood has devastated the Texas Hill Country. Their band, Nova-Scotia, has been booked to play Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic. And after a fortuitous meeting, Payne and Rusti King fall in love.

Follow the lively trail from the crooked racetracks of the Texas Hill Country back to Music City.

About the Author

Born and raised in barren West Texas, Dekker Malone fell in love with the Texas Hill Country during the spring of 1972. That was the year of the big flood, the one that killed and uprooted. And the year Dekker began learning to play guitar. The year he wrote his first song.

Dekker was attending college there; one that was divided into two major ethnic groups ... cowboys (also called rednecks and kickers, short for shit-kickers) and hippies (also called longhairs, freaks, and dopers). The two diametrical groups even had their own sides in the dorm cafeteria. But Dekker, like his music, was somewhere in the middle. And that worked fine, most of the time, unless there was a food fight between the cowboys and hippies, or later in life, when he began sending his music to publishers. Then he was pelted from both sides.

In 1985, Dekker returned from West Texas to the Hill Country just long enough to marry his bride, the daughter of a racehorse trainer. The wedding was held in a bend of Lake Dunlap, beneath the shade of enormous oak and pecan trees that had somehow managed to survive the flood of '72. There was beer and Bar-B-Q.

Dekker's Hill Country bride, Rosanna, is a published author of children's literature. They live in the country, outside a sleepy West Texas town, with their children, horses, cats and two golden retrievers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great book!, September 26, 2001
By
This review is from: Nashville Gold (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed every page of Nashville Gold. From the very beginning, the author had me hooked. Being from Texas, this book really touched me the way the author described the beautiful Texas Hill Country, the horseracing scene, and while I don't personally know too much about the country music industry, it was clear the author does! The characters were so believable and so real, I was very attached to them (the good guys at least!) by the end of the book and really hated to see the book end! I hope there's going to be a follow up to Nashville Gold because I wasn't through reading when the book was over!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Fun & Entertainment!!, January 2, 2002

A MUST read! The characters are so well written it's as if they are real, rather than fiction. The author describes in vivid detail the area of Texas which I grew up & I can still see now through the vision of his writing. I tried repeatedly to put the book down, but was unable to lose the grip which was necessary to keep it from slipping from my hands in between the hysterical laughter and sobbing tears.
Definitely a book that will make you fall in love with the characters, their stories, and the wonderful Texas ways of life.
I can't wait for a sequel! I will be standing in line to buy copies for everyone I know!
