5.0 out of 5 stars GOLF IN THE KINGDOM on acid and nitrous oxide.

I'm the author of THE GREEN and THE FOURSOME, written under the pseudonym "Troon McAllister." It's not often that I get jealous of someone else's writing, but David Feherty has a touch and a voice that is to die for. Never mind the "professional" reviewer who completely misperceives the point of this book (they would call LORD OF THE RINGS "implausible"), silliness is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty funny, though a little over the top
David Feherty's comic novel about the loveable inhabitants of the Scrought's Wood Golf Club, and their raunchy adventures on and off the links is a pretty funny story, with a few laugh-out-loud moments sprinkled in amongst piles of bathroom humor.

The writing is okay, though it leaves something to be desired, and even the most die-hard Feherty fan will grow weary of the...

5.0 out of 5 stars GOLF IN THE KINGDOM on acid and nitrous oxide., May 21, 2002
This review is from: A Nasty Bit of Rough (Hardcover)

I'm the author of THE GREEN and THE FOURSOME, written under the pseudonym "Troon McAllister." It's not often that I get jealous of someone else's writing, but David Feherty has a touch and a voice that is to die for. Never mind the "professional" reviewer who completely misperceives the point of this book (they would call LORD OF THE RINGS "implausible"), silliness is the whole bloody point. NASTY ROUGH is pure whimsy of the best sort, with some parts so hysterically funny it would be just as well you didn't read it with other people in the vicinity.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Feherty is one of the funniest guys alive, if you love golf, June 12, 2002

I read it on a cross country flight and certainly aggravated my seatmate with frequent laugh-out-loud episodes. I couldnt help it and I couldnt put it down. The goofy characters are great, the plot keeps your attention to the end and the classically dry Feherty insights are funny as hell. However, if you dont love golf and dont have an appreciation for "old-style" golf in Scotland and England, you wont get it. Also if you are offended by excessive alcohol consumption and unabashed potty humor, this book is not for you. Otherwise, get a copy now.

4.0 out of 5 stars No golf mysticism found here; just damn funny writing, July 4, 2002

This review is from: A Nasty Bit of Rough (Hardcover)
This is a fabulously funny book by David Feherty. Yes, the guy is glib and delightful on television. But who knew he would translate so well to writing? The guy has a real talent - I hope this work is just the first of many.

A couple of items worth noting:

1) There's no "golf in the kingdom"-like mysticism found here like in so many paens to the sport these days. You get the sense right away that Feherty will have none of that [stuff].

2) This book may set the record for the most varied and colorful euphemisms describing the male genitalia.

3) This book may set the record for the most varied and colorful euphemisms describing flatulence and excrement.

4) This book - despite its sophomoric and crude humor - is amazingly literate and quite politically correct (wait'll you get a load of Uncle Dickie's posse).

5) This book is more non-golf than golf. Hats off to the author for showing he can be humorous regardless of the subject.

...and you've gotta love any writer that steals a joke from Billy Connolly & then footnotes the guy when he uses it. Great touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you golf you must read this book!, April 16, 2002
This review is from: A Nasty Bit of Rough (Hardcover)
This is one of the funniest, ribald, insane stories I have ever read! If you emptied out an insane asylum you would not find a zanier bunch of miscreants, in fact one of the characters "is" an escapee from an asylum. I read this book in one sitting, but it was hard to read through the tears of laughter. If you love the game of golf you might just find a little bit of yourself in more than one of the members of Scrought's Wood. Mr. Feherty please pen another novel soon!!!

If you think David Feherty is amusing with his golf commentary on television, you will love this book. I couldn't stop reading it. Definitely one for the golf library!

Forget about the title of this review - golf is just the backdrop for this hilarious book! It would have been just as funny on the shuffle board courts of south Florida. (Hey, there's an idea!) Try as I might to restrain myself to keep from waking my sleeping kids, I laughed out loud about every five minutes as I read A Nasty Bit of Rough! The characters were comical, the dialogue was knee-slapping funny and the story moved at a great pace. My only hope for Christmas this year is that Mr. Feherty isn't done with this oddball crew!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious !!, November 12, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Nasty Bit of Rough (Hardcover)
David Feherty's fiction book is a book I found enjoyable when I first read it, at least a year ago. I picked it up again, and this time had time to finish it (origianlly it was from the library). The antics of Uncle Dickie and his fight against the evil Scottish clan are some of the greatest I've ever read, which may not seem like a lot from me, but I read a lot. This book is perhaps the greatest golf book of its time. If you enjoy comedy or golf, this is a book for you. I also would like to reccomend "Bermuda Grass" by Keith Miles and "The Putt at the End of The World", by various authors.

David Feherty's comic novel about the loveable inhabitants of the Scrought's Wood Golf Club, and their raunchy adventures on and off the links is a pretty funny story, with a few laugh-out-loud moments sprinkled in amongst piles of bathroom humor.

The writing is okay, though it leaves something to be desired, and even the most die-hard Feherty fan will grow weary of the barrage of bathroom jokes. Do we really need to know that a caddy pooped his pants in an airplane once (although the subsequent episode involving that caddy and a red sweatshirt is one of the funnier moments in the book)?

I laughed quite a bit at this book, and even if it was a little heavy-handed with the toilet humor, it has some absolutely hilarious moments. If you like golf and David Feherty's sense of humor, then you'll enjoy this book.

This story is crazy, bizarre, absolutely unbelievable. And its possibly the funniest book I have ever read. I woke my wife up with belly laughs and had commuters looking at me with disbelief as I roared with laughter on my train. Just thinking of this book puts a smile on my face. A must for all golfers!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious even if you don't like golf, August 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Nasty Bit of Rough (Hardcover)
I absolutely loved this novel because it combines witty humor with outlandish characters. In fact, although the book takes place in a fanciful world in Scotland, and is all about golf, you don't need to like or even know anything about golf to get the jokes and the plot. Be advised...you will probably laugh out loud even if you are in a public place!
