Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8?These two brief titles describe the upbringing and home life of Candice Bergen and Natalie Cole and their fathers' influence on their careers. Young readers today may not have enjoyed the comic wit of Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy or the sweet crooning of Nat "King" Cole, and Press enthusiastically describes their contributions during past years. At the same time, he makes it clear that Candice Bergen enjoys celebrity status due to her own talents, and that Natalie Cole's long fight for sobriety has given her new maturity, which is reflected in her work. Numerous black-and-white and full-color photographs enliven the text; highlighted words are defined in the glossary. These slim biographies, with their clear, simple style, would appeal especially to reluctant readers. Candice Bergen's autobiography, Knock Wood (Ballantine, 1985), is a good follow-up for interested mature readers.?Susan R. Farber, Chappaqua Library, NY

His most recent screenplay consultation resulted in a director getting his first feature film deal with The Bubble Factory in Los Angeles. His first how-to writing book, How To Write What You Want & Sell What You Write, has been selling steadily for almost two decades. The latest version from Fall River Books comes out in the summer of 2011.
