Inspirational Romance,
By BCBLoyd "bcbloyd" (Wisconsin, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nate (Rock Creek Six) (Paperback)
The Rock Creek Six are a half-dozen men with troubling, violent pasts, and only their honor among "friends" left to keep them living. When one is in need, the others are there - no reason necessary. I bought Cash first, which turned out to be the last of the series - don't you hate it when that happens! ;) - But, I fell in love with the characters and had to learn all of their stories. I recommend you read them in order: Reese, Sullivan, Jed, Rico, Nate, and Cash. If you read only one, Nate is my favorite choice. Primarily, because Ms. Handeland goes beyond your typical love story of a man with a troubled past who finds a woman that captures his heart and teaches him to love again. Nate is a preacher-turned-gunman who, after losing his wife and child, blames himself and loses his faith in God. A former Confederate soldier, he is an alcoholic on the verge of committing suicide when the heroine, a Christian missionary, walks through the door and quite literally turns his life up-side-down. It's a truly touching story and has become one of my favorite romance novels of all time. Thank you Lori for an absolutely inspirational love-story... and to Lori and Linda Devlin (who wrote three of the six books) for a spectacular series. I wish there were more than six!

Nate is book #5 in the Rock Creek series & it won't let you down. At the beginning of this book you will meet Jo Clancy again & she is determined to travel to Mexico alone to retrieve Nate whom Cash was unable to bring home. Jo travels to Mexico & upon her arrival finds Nate practically with a gun to his head. While in Mexico Jo loses her virginity & becomes pregnant. She eventually agrees to marry Nate, the man she has always loved, & she has made a vow to herself to bring Nate to believe in God again. Nate is determined to never fall in love again but will it happen? This was a wonderful book in this series. I highly recommend this series. The Rock Creek series in order: #1 Reese #2 Sullivan #3 Rico #4 Jed #5 Nate #6 Cash.

Drunken Ex-Preacher Turned Hero...BRAVO!,
By
This review is from: Nate (Rock Creek Six) (Paperback)
In a nutshell: Nate Lang has been trying to die for more than a decade. A preacher who has lost his faith in God, Nate has used alcohol to drown the guilt and feelings of failure. Jo Clancy is the only thing that stands between him and suicide. The daughter of Rock Creek's late preacher, she befriended Nate when he first rode into town with the rest of the Six. She's believed ever since that she could save him. One mistake results in a hasty wedding. Jo believes that if only she can help Nate see his faith in God is still there, he will give up alcohol and learn to forgive himself.
Fifth installment of the "Rock Creek Six" series: Still excellent with the consistency in character development. These two authors are to be complimented. My opinion: Oh, my. I am amazed at how well Lori Handeland did with this book. It must be difficult to turn a suicidal, drunken ex-preacher into a hero and actually make him...well, heroic. Nate was one of those heroes that made you want to cry half the time. He was so tortured with feelings of guilt. I felt his development was believable. And although he does manage to quit drinking, the author does not insult our intelligence by insinuating that love "fixed" his drinking problem. Thank you for this, Ms Handeland. I appreciate the element of reality. Then there's Jo. She's so wonderfully written. She's afraid of nothing...except lizards. :o) Believing that God answers all prayers has helped her cope with an unloving father. She is wise enough to realize that sometimes God's answer is no. I thought she was particularly well-developed. The storyline in this book didn't really include saving the town, or a mystery, or someone hunting the hero/heroine down to kill them, as the others in the series did. This one seriously focused on the inner battle of Nate and to a lesser degree, the inner battles of Jo. The supporting characters were in this one more than the others, although we only "hear" snippets about Jed and Hannah (Jed). Complaints: Anyone who has read my previous reviews of this series knows where I'm going. The love scenes were too graphic. They were not necessary for this excellent story. Oh, well. 5 Stars for consistency in characters/overall storyline, specific storyline, emotion, flow and believability. 0.2 stars removed for the love scenes. Overall, 4.8 stars. "Rock Creek Six" in order: Reese, Sullivan, Rico, Jed, Nate, Cash.

Who wouldn't enjoy seeing the evolution of male friendship?,

This review is from: Nate (Rock Creek Six) (Paperback)
Nate is the first of the rock creek series guys that I've read but it won't be my last. It was a great story about an extremely troubled guy surrounded by what we refer to as unconditional friendships and love. The premise was certainly original. And bringing male emotion into the forefront is certainly original. It is written with such reality that you can feel nate's torment and every time he reaches for a bottle you hold your breath!!! Great job, Lori.

#5 -- BACK ON TRACK -- WONDERFUL!,
By
This review is from: Nate (Rock Creek Six) (Paperback)
Nate Lang is missing! Jo Clancy is sure as shootin' going to find him and bring him home.Nate drove Cash away -- he was going to end it all. Or so he thought. Jo had high hopes for Nate until Angela appeared. All she had to do was get Nate onto the Commanche trail and head for Rock Creek. In the meantime the four, Reese, Cash, Rico and Sullivan went after Jo to bring her and Nate home. Wouldn't you know [grin] the Commanche's caught them too. The story keeps getting better and better -- Nate still wants nothing to do with Jo - although she seems to be the most stable thing in his life. His little solution to Jo's ruined reputation did not go over very big. And, oh my gosh, everyone's coming up pregnant. You will love meeting up with all of the guys again and their ladies -- and hey, don't forget all of the great kids. A lot more beer and not too much froth. Great going, Lori. Aw! how come Nate [glad the cover was not bald, and he sure wasn't 35] had to be 35 - glad Jo was 25 - plenty of time for a large family. A truly great blessing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- WHAT A GREAT KEEPER! |
