I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. It is full of highly detailed tips and tricks to suit any home or budget, showcasing a variety of styles and spaces. Additionally, his perspectives on and suggestions for entertaining are fresh and revelatory--he doesn't just make it look easy, he shows exactly how you can too. Best of all is the writing style--intimate and conversational, it makes for easy and fun reading, as if you were having a casual chat with him. This book is a must have for anyone interested in making their spaces more interesting and beautiful and their parties more memorable and delicious (great-sounding recipes included).

What a lovely book. Nothing pushy or over the top. This is real. Elegant and thoughtful with a sense of humor as well as being very helpful.

I was so excited, reading these reviews, that I ordered the book for myself. I thought it would be THE perfect combination. But for me, it was a real disappointment.

Mr. Turner himself seems absolutely charming. I like his design sense, and I love his dogs. (I must have seen him on that TV show, though one of the designers on it seems more like a vandal than a decorator. But I digress.)

My problems with the book: First, while I like the idea of using affordable items, and even like many of the items themselves, at times the book starts feeling like a Pottery Barn infomercial. There are a lot of his designs for them featured in this book. I like that he usually names paint colors, though. Not crazy about the pun titles for "The Rules" sections ("going Nate-ive," etc.), though I think "The Rules" have some good ideas but that's a minor quibble.

I do wonder about the lack of books on all but perhaps 3 pages. They're used almost solely as decoration, it seems. Also, is a tabletop so crowded that you couldn't put a cup of tea down really such a great design idea? That seems to be one of his trademarks. And the "affordable" ideas (ordering pizza in a pinch, buying fabric by the yard to use as tablecloths) could be covered in a magazine article. And then very expensive objects are invariably placed all over these "affordable" table coverings. Fake-affordability.

It may be "effortless" (a word used in his title) to hire a Raj tent for a party, or to string together a billion marigolds for a traditional Indian curtain, but not many of us would or could do it. Finally, saying that a gigantic ottoman is "large, but not to the point where it throws the seating out of proportion" does not make it so (p.

Nathan Turner's American Style is a collection of classic and timeless moments, filled
with warmth, humor, and vision that can be executed by virtually anyone who cares about and believes in living a contemporary lifestyle filled with carefree chic and easy- to- interpret style. I would consider it a manual to be referred to over and over for inspiration in design, decorating, entertaining, and all around sophistication, without any stuffiness or impossible to achieve looks. Perfect for the typical American household, regardless of where and how you live....Nathan Turner has put between these pages how you'll WANT to live without spending a fortune!!!
You should buy one for yourself and one for every friend and family member...I guarantee not a disappointment in the entire book!!!

I truly enjoy Nathan's outlook on style. I am a native Californian and love how he was able to capture the vibe of the West coast style of decorating and entertaining. I think that with Nathan being raised in Northern California and living in Southern California, he has a great ability to encapsulate all that is, "Californian". I appreciated the quick tips and the fun recipes too! This is going to be my "go-to" for host/hostess gifts this holiday season!
