Such an insightful book. It makes sense of what's going on today and a good warning to those who have a power to make change. loved this read.

Sad that Washington has put this country in this position it is in and most of the nation's low information voters have no clue as to the gravity of the situation or why we got here. Author does a great job of quantifying the numbers, the tipping points (ie: rise in treasury rates), short-cuts that won't work (ie: print money to pay back the debt, fixed exchange rates) and real viable solutions to right the ship (cut spending now and grow the economy faster than the rise of the debt balance).

I was hoping for a balanced study instead it is essentially a book written for the conservative (Tea Party?) viewpoint. Many important metrics left out ( I suspect because it was not supportive of the book's intent).

If you’re not worried about the economy and the economic future of our country, you might be by the time you’ve finished reading Murray T. Holland’s A NATION IN THE RED. If you are already concerned about what’s going on, your fears will probably be justified, and maybe even amplified, if you read the book.

Holland says, “The national debt can never be paid off, it is like a cancer we will have to live with the rest of the life of the nation.” Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? Holland has over three decades of experience working in the field of finance. He has studied and analyzed the question of debt extensively. His findings and conclusions form the basis for this book.

Among the things he discusses are:

• the actual size of the nation’s deficit as opposed to what has been previously calculated;
• how big the deficit will grow in the next ten years if drastic changes aren’t made;
• how the nation’s debt affects everyone;
• why the U.S. has such a high debt-to-Gross National Product ratio;
• the five options countries when faced with a large debt; and
• what the Federal Reserve can and must do to reverse the trend and rein in any future problems (as much as is possible to do so).

Holland is strongly against the practice known as “deficit spending”. It sounds like a good idea, but what it really does is reduce the amount of the amount of money available to the private sector - - you and I. Instead, he advocates putting money in the taxpayers’ hands through tax refunds or tax reductions. However, when Bush tried this by giving households checks, most of the money was put into savings instead of being spent.

Great book if you are not real deep when it comes to economics, and the history of countries that have accumulated too much debt, and the problems caused. Written in easy to understand terminology that a non financial person can understand. The author repeats himself, but it makes for a good summary, especially if you can't read the book in a couple sittings. I highly recommend this book. Paints a picture of what is likely to happen going forward for the United States if certain actions are not taken, along with his expectation of it happening considering our political office holders. Great explanation in the differences between Conservative and Liberal mind sets. Realistic approach. No sugar coating in this book.
