I hate the phrase "Total Package" but it is apt in this expanded "Rise of Nations" dual-disc package.

The original game was good - and very frustrating. The computer will neither lay down and let you roll over it, nor simply overwhelm you. It will, however, put up a heckuva good fight.

Even with overwhelming force, attrition plays such a large part of the damage your invading units receive that by the time the opponent is beat, you'll not have much left to mount an effective attack.

In short, this is a strategy game that really makes you think ahead.

Rise of Nations: Thrones & Patriots
I purchased this for my grandson for Christmas. He loved it. I had to fight to get him to turn it off. He is 12. This follows along the same lines as Age of Empires (Age of Kings) Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings

At times there are very negative reviews on this game because the graphics don't meet the expectations of certain individuals. I would strongly disagree with those views. While there aren't top-notch graphics in this game, they are still very nice. The user interface is excellent. Very easy to learn, and VERY addicting. It is already a classic RTS game, and for very good reason. The included expansion pack does a nice job of improving the experience without taking anything away from the original appeal of the game.

Just have to say that the American civ fits with my style of gameplay so well that it has really increased the fun of the game. So much so that I have yet to try any of the other new civs. I keep meaning to, but . . .

Choosing governments has been executed very well, too, and I think it's a definite plus. I'd look forward to that concept expanded somewhat in a sequel . . .

This is a great set. The original game is great to begin with but the expansion was even better. This game continues to be pulled out and re-installed and I have yet to find a game that matches it in playability and entertainment.

This game is amazing! It takes you through history and is very challenging. It is also cool on how you can take over the world or just conquer a nation. If you don't want to win with an army you can always win by building wonders such as the Pyramids. I've had this this game for over two years and still enjoy it. It's different every time you play. Overall this game is great.

Like another reviewer said, this game is shipped with they key code for Age of Mythology, plus the expansion section of the DVD take 10 hours to install (faulty DVD)
Avoid!

I've had the Ubisoft release of this game (from Amazon) for about a month now. I am very happy with it. It is very similar to Age of Empires or Command and Conquer RTS games of the past, with its own twist of course, so if you like those games you will like this one too. It has very low system requirements (graphics, ram, HD space)so it will probably work with most any PC, even one that's 5 years old or more, yet it still has acceptable graphics for an RTS. If you spend a lot of money on games frequently and have become a bit jaded, are not really into or just tired of old school RTS, or place graphics as a primary consideration when buying a game then I don't think this game is for you.

I also own an original copy of Rise of Nations from when it was put out directly by Microsoft a few years back. Even after a few years, I still enjoy playing the game every so often and I got this newer copy so I can play the Thrones and Patriots expansion and also play with a friend in online/lan games.

I have played a few single player and multi-player games, both online and lan, on a desktop PC running Windows XP and a Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium with no problems (so far). This disc is a little thinner and lighter than the original but has not affected its performance that I can tell.

This game has a tremendous amount of replay value. The single player campaign is only a small fraction of the game and I only ever played through it once. The true value of this game is the single player battles as they call it. And also the multi-player battles. You can specify how many players (computer or human) up to 8 total, how many teams (if any), the rules for victory, the maps, how many resources you start with and so on and so on. There is a map editor as well but I haven't had to use it because you only select the map size and type - then the computer generates one of that type and size that you specified so you actually never play the exact same map twice. The Big Huge maps are just that - very large, suitable for up to 8 players.

The Rise of Nations twist on the RTS is that you choose from one of 10 or so nations you want to play as, with its unique stats and abilities, and can progress from the ancient days of spears and catapults to modern times with stealth bombers and ICBMs. You can specify to start at any "age" and end at any age so if you only want muskets and cannons you can limit it to that or you could limit it to only modern day tanks and planes, etc. The game is not meant to be historically accurate - its just meant to be fun to play.
