Biography

In February of 1941, a relatively unknown bandleader by the name of Stan Kenton auditioned his orchestra at the Rendezvous Ballroom on Balboa Island, California, one of the area's most prestigious venues for big band jazz. Although the band had only been together for a few months, they were able to convince the club to give them a summer booking. They opened on the night of May 30, 1941 ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Kenton: He suprises you! November 19, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Kenton orchestra was on a plane headed to England for a series of concerts, one of which would become the "Birthday in Britain" album. Someone mentioned that it was traditional to play God Save the Queen at the start of live performances in England. A big-band arrangement was hastily cobbled together before they landed and was unveiled at their first gig. It was an unconventional rendering and a bit risky as the chart could have insulted the audience. Instead, it brought the house down. The Brits were thrilled that Stan would put "his touch" on God Savers. Fast forward a bit and the decision was made to arrange a number of other National Anthems and commit them to vinyl. I think it was originally released on Stan's Creative World label. Regardless, the charts are each unique and in some cases particularly appealing. The album is worth the price just to hear "Oh Canada". With the exception of the American Trilogy, none of the pieces is very long but each is a tiny big band gem. If you enjoyed Journey to Capricorn or Kenton '76 you'll really like this unusual album. It's the same group of musicians and they may well have been the one of the very best and most powerful bands Stan ever assembled.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time April 30, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This early '70s album is finally released on CD for the
first time. It's not the best of Kenton, but it is a
good completer for those who must have everything.
