The Noble Horse is a spellbinding journey through the ages, beginning with the origins of the animal some 60 million years ago. Superb writing and stunning photography ignite this history lesson: "Spark of ancient myth, pride of king and conqueror; history was forged to the beat of its hooves...." At the documentary's center is a modern horse race in Mongolia, where horses are so revered that the national drink is fermented mare's milk. The narrative touches on an exclusive riding school in Spain, the fluctuating state of wild horses in the U.S., and the breaking of a wild horse in northern California. The epilogue is the story of Carousel, an aging horse that helped its handicapped rider win a blue ribbon in the 1996 Paralympics. Just 60 years before the first moon landing, the world was driven by horsepower. This video could make you believe it still is. --Valerie J. Nelson

4.0 out of 5 stars For the love of horses, December 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: National Geograhic Video - The Noble Horse [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was considering this video as a present for a 14 year old girl who loves horses and I think it will be just the thing for her. I was worried that the content and narrative might be too sophisticated or just not interesting to her, but I don't think it'll be a big problem. The video was definitely made for adults, but I believe teenagers will enjoy the video as well, especially since the cinematography is so good. The horses are beautiful and beautifully filmed.

There is a lot of history about the horse, but the emphasis of the video is definitely on the horse's place, uses and problems in modern day society. Even someone who knows a lot about horses will learn from and enjoy this video, I know I did!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entrancing look at the history of the horse, March 5, 2006
This review is from: National Geograhic Video - The Noble Horse [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My 6-year old has been enjoying this video for about a year. There are some parts that are a bit strong - in terms of content (like the parts dealing with horse slaughter and the death of some of the Mongolian horses) - but she gets through it.

There is a similar Nature series video, starring Julia Roberts, that explores the history of the Mongolian horse.

Both are great for the horse lover.
