Amazon.com Review

Did you know the country of Indonesia is made up of more than 3,000 islands? Or that the world's largest water lilies, in the Amazon River, are big enough to hold a child? Young explorers will be riveted by this big, glorious atlas for children. Chock full of photographs, facts, and maps, it's a terrific introduction to the wonders of the planet. Organized by continent, the atlas breaks down each area into sections on "The Land" and "The People." With both political and physical maps, young readers can begin to grasp the different ways the world is divided. Each section is introduced by a child from that region, in traditional garb, greeting readers in her or his own language. Fun, informative tidbits are presented in an easy-to-digest manner, as well as more complex but still manageable lessons on mapmaking and map reading.

National Geographic's world-renowned cartographers joined forces with educational consultants and geographers to create this state-of-the-art world atlas for the youngest, most curious explorers. Stunning full-color photographs reveal the varied landscapes and populations of the planet, and galvanize readers to get out there and see it all for themselves. (Click to see a sample spread. From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6-For children who are just learning to navigate their way around their own communities, understanding maps can be a challenge. These oversized books will be useful guides to their first forays into the larger world. The Beginner's World Atlas starts by looking at a house, its street, and the surrounding neighborhood, showing how they appear on a map. In simple language, it explains what a physical map is and provides an example of one. Clear, full-color photographs offer views of what the different land features depicted on such a map might look like. The political map receives similar attention. For each continent, both types of maps are provided along with large, often stunning photos depicting landscapes, famous sites, and native peoples. Brief statements note the countries, cities, peoples, languages, and diversity within these areas. A few extra pages are devoted to North America. Once children have absorbed the lessons of this book, they will be ready for the United States Atlas. Introductory material explains how to read a map while crisp, full-color photographs and a physical map provide an overview for each region of the U.S. They are followed by political maps (often double page) of each state. These profiles include a short descriptive text and some essential facts and statistics. Additional sections look at the "Territories" and "Federal Lands." High-quality illustrations and excellent maps characterize both of these titles. They will be wonderful resources for novices and excellent teaching tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational & Captivating, September 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: National Geographic Beginner's World Atlas (New Millennium) (Hardcover)
Our family is captivated by this atlas. This is a world atlas that focuses mainly on continents, with some interesting facts about the countries with some fun facts. The interesting feature in the books is that it includes a lot of physical and geological information. The readers are able to grasp a perspective of the continents with and without political outlines allowing a geological view. The pictures are bright and captivating. The maps include both physical and political maps on separate pages. The physical maps are great for teaching about map keys, symbols, and geographical features. We've noticed the political maps are consistant with coloring outlines of other National Geographic's Maps.

Our children love to trace (with tracing paper) the outlines of the countinents and countries. This adds an added dimension of focus on a country's shape and surrounding geographical factors. We use this atlas as a great geographical resource and recommend the book for grades K - 2nd.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's an ATLAS....., December 9, 2005
This review is from: National Geographic Beginner's World Atlas (New Millennium) (Hardcover)

...not a geography book. According to Merriam-Webster Online dictionary the definition of atlas is: "a bound collection of maps often including illustrations, informative tables, or textual matter." That would describe this book.

The definition of geography is: "a science that deals with the description, distribution, and interaction of the diverse physical, biological, and cultural features of the earth's surface." If you want something that explain the world by "emphasizing the people and natural world" I think a geography book would be a better choice.

I found "National Geographic Beginner's World Atlas" to be excellent...especially for young children. I wish I'd had such a book when I was a kid. It has easy-to-read maps that have lots of good information, but not so much information that it is overwhelming for young children. I'm 52 and enjoyed looking at it; I even learn a few things I didn't know. I plan on getting it for my nieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Beginners Atlas!!!, January 5, 2010
This review is from: National Geographic Beginner's World Atlas (New Millennium) (Hardcover)
My son starts Kindergarten fall of '10. I went to our library and borrowed several different geography and atlas books, to plan his curriculum. (We are homeschoolers) I was looking at all the different books, and had yet to get to this one. My son found it before I did, and he immediately took to it. He said it was time to do school, and kept asking me what everything said. It is true that this book does not have a lot of depth to it, but it has completely mesmerized him. We will be using the book for the entire school year, and will use it as a spring board. I will get shorter books from the library to add depth to the topics covered in this atlas. I gave this book five stars for the mere fact that it has captivated my busy little 5 year old.
