Book Description

1426201966 978-1426201967 November 6, 2007 2
National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World was recognized by the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping in the annual map design competition as the best in the atlas/book category. Now, the Second Edition—with more than 3,000 updates, 32 new pages of expanded content, and 500 maps, charts, graphs, flags, and illustrations—is the ultimate geographic reference for every home, office and classroom.

The atlas opens with beautifully rendered, up-to-date, thoroughly indexed, political and physical maps of the world. Satellite mosaics depict the Earth from hundreds of miles above. World thematic maps follow, presenting plate tectonics, climate and weather, oceans, population, religion, energy, and the economy. Health and education, environmental stress, and conflict and terror are also covered, providing a review of the increasingly complex issues we face today.

Informative, intriguing, and accessible, National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World visually portrays important aspects of the world in a way only maps can. Full-color physical and land cover maps enhance and enrich readers' understanding of the Earth's natural features. New continental maps cover water availability and natural events such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Country profiles provide national flags and valuable facts for all 193 independent nations of the world.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Maps in this atlas are similar to those in National Geographic Family Reference Atlas of the World (2d ed., 2007) but larger, often covering double-page spreads (with some gutter loss). On the other hand, there are many fewer maps. For Europe, for example, there are one physical and one political map for the entire continent, plus some thematic maps, but no regional or national maps showing individual countries in more detail. Introductory material includes sections on climate, religion, trade, and other topics. An appendix shows average temperatures and rainfall for selected locations. --Mary Ellen Quinn

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice thin paperback, January 11, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, Second Edition (Paperback)
I bought this product for two high school aged relatives. The maps are excellent and the information is clearly presented. For the cost, I thought it was an excellent value. Be aware that this is not a very thick volume and as it is paperback, I'm a little concerned about how it will hold up under H.S. and college use. As a home reference, I would rate this as excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Depends What You're Looking For, January 15, 2009
This review is from: National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, Second Edition (Paperback)
This is a great Atlas depending on what you're looking for. I'll make it simple for you:

1) If you're looking for an Atlas with detailed maps including many different cities in different countries all around the world, DO NOT BUY THIS.

2) If you're looking for an Atlas with a great deal of general knowledge, including maps with just the big cities, BUY THIS.

I was looking for an Atlas to help myself get acquainted with the world. While I did stumble across a couple cities that weren't on the Atlas that I was puzzled about, I did find nearly every major place of interest on the maps. The vast majority of the Atlas contains other things-- geographical maps (no cities), all the different country flags and statistics, etc.

This Atlas should receive a fairly high rating if you buy it for the right reasons. Buy it for the wrong ones, and it will not offer you what you want.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good buy perhaps for a 6th grader, April 15, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: National Geographic Concise Atlas of the World, Second Edition (Paperback)
This book gives a lot of demographic information with charts and comparative maps spread over 160 pages. In reality, there are only 6 pages of actual physical maps (one for each continent) with skimpy information. Just a few cities are marked for each country. Definitely not recommended as a reference atlas.
