This volume captures the excitement of the past in journeys you can take today. Experience the luxury and romance of Europe's fabled Orient Express. Take a thrilling safari into the heart of East Africa by Jeep and hot-air balloon. Travel through exotic Rajasthan, India, on the Palace on Wheels excursion train and by elephant. Cruise between towering crags on the racing Yangtze River through a landscape cherished by poets and painters. Embark on one of the world's longest, most spectacular train rides as you follow the path of Canada's settlers who moved westward with the railroad. Period illustrations and biographical sketches of famous individuals associated with each journey add historical flavor.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

National Geographic's Great Journeys of the World brings some of the world's greatest journeys to life with Geographic's stunning photographs and firsthand accounts of writers on the road (rail, river, and ramble). If you've ever wanted to experience a ride on the Orient Express, an East African safari, the Royal Train through Rajasthan, a cruise down the Yangtze River, or Canada's Transcontinental Railroad, pick up this book and come along for the ride.

Dotted throughout are intriguing personality profiles of William Van Horne, the Paul Bunyan of the Canadian railway; Isabella Bird, the ultimate Victorian woman traveler who was her healthiest while on the least-traveled routes; Karen Blixen, the compelling storyteller best known by her pen name, Isak Dinesen; and Georges Nagelmackers, the father of the Orient Express and the private sleeping car.

The photos bring us into the wondrous realms of these journeys: zebras passing single file through bright yellow grasses; the exotic dress and traditions of an Indian wedding in Jaipur; the lush greens of a vineyard near Verona, Italy; and pilgrims sitting on the toes of Dafo, the world's largest sitting Buddha statue, which resides on the Min River near Leshan, China. -- Kathryn True

This review is from: National Geographic Destinations, Great Journeys of the World (NG Destinations) (Paperback)
I was getting this book at 50% off on an Indian web site. Since I didn't find any reviews on Amazon.com ;-) I was wondering whether I should go ahead with the purchase. I took a chance and ordered the same. And what a nice pleasant little surprise it turned out to be. As with all National Geographic books, I check out all the photos on Round One and then get down to reading the stories. The photo of the yawning cheetah (in the African journey) itself is worth the price of the book! Then that the dawn shot of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the fire-eater from Rajasthan!

Great stuff; I am looking forward to Round Two.
