Book Description

May 24, 2011 7 - 9 yearsNational Geographic Kids Almanac (Quality)1070L (What's this?)
Check out the world’s best-selling National Geographic Kids 2012 Almanac, No. 3 on The New York Times Best Sellers list for Children's Paperbacks. In the lively style of National Geographic Kids magazine, this colorful page-turner excites young people about their world and everything in it. The National Geographic Kids 2012 Almanac—also available in Canadian and International editions—is packed with fun-to-browse features, useful reference material, homework help developed by educators, and the kind of quirky facts that kids adore. Amazing animals, cool inventions, funny roadside attractions, outer space, green living, natural disasters, maps, puzzles—it's all here in one irresistible volume.

While competing almanacs offer about 10 percent new content each year, this book delivers at least 40 percent new content, including new articles, games, photos, and facts. A newly updated Your World section opens the almanac with timely information and unique National Geographic content. A 100% new game section features photo-puzzles, illustrated pen-and-pencil games, and other brainteasers. Every chapter is updated with exciting new content: photos of animals, adventure, and nature; maps of the continents, new this year; hundreds of facts and figures; and fascinating stories about incredible creatures, space, vacations, and more. Based in part on the award-winning National Geographic Kids magazine, the National Geographic Kids 2012 Almanac also boasts material created by National Geographic's contributing researchers and photographers in the field. With the 2010 and 2011 editions selling hundreds of thousands of copies, this bold new almanac is poised to make an even bigger splash.

The National Geographic Kids 2012 Almanac is the only interactive Almanac for kids, now featuring fun digital extras, such as bar codes that you can  scan with your smart phone to see free National Geographic animal videos, photo galleries, and trivia quizzes. No smart phone? No problem. A companion website provides even more multimedia fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome as always! May 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
Awesome! That's what my kids say every time we get a copy of the National Geographic Kids Almanac. There's never a moment's peace when they read because they follow me around astonishing me with facts and trivia and wonder. "Mom, did you know...?" "Mom, guess what!" "Mom, you have to see this!" It's the kind of interruptions I love because I know the kids are reading for the sheer thrill of it and learning, too. - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

This almanac keeps getting better and better. My 8-year-old loves reading all the animal facts, and her brother can't get enough of the new game section. This is sure to be the summer go-to book in our house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kristi Bernard via NG Kids June 17, 2011
Format:Paperback
Do you know what's great about an Almanac? The answer is it's easy to find all types of information in an organized manner. But, what's great about a NG Kids Almanac is not only does it have great information, the photos are phenomenal. But that's not all NG Kids has to offer, there are games, special calendars, and special links so readers can be more interactive. There are more than 500 incredible photos through out. Some of the weirdest animals you will ever see, for example, Mr. Blobbly is literally a fish that looks like a mushy gray blob. He even has his own website and he's housed in a museum and you can follow him on Facebook. His scientific name is Fathead Sculpin fish. Another strange creature kids will love to read about is nicknamed after the Abominable Snowman, it's the Yeti Crab. He's small blind and furry. If readers want to know the secret life of turtles there is a site listed and when you go to the link you will see the animals live and in action with a crittercam-wildcam right at your fingertips. While flipping through the vivid and colorful pages readers can read about Holidays, Culture, Food and Super Science facts. The games section has aliens that have lost their way home, lost and found items in a movie theater and a fill-in the blank safari adventure to name a few. In the Wonders of Nature section readers will learn about Biomes, which are major communities where plants and animals adapt to their specific surroundings. Forest, fresh water, marine, desert, grassland and tundra areas fall into this category. If you have a smart phone there on codes on select pages that you can scan to explore more about NG Kids right from your phone. Readers will also learn about awesome adventures, history, dangerous creatures, how to go green and the world's coolest and largest skyscrapers like the amazing rotating building that looks like a rubics cube, the Dynamic Towers are located in Dubai, that is when they are built. Learn more about the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Egypt. In the back of the book are indexes and answers for easy reference. Kids, parents and teachers will love this wonderful fact filled guide to use and share for many years to come.
