5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with activities and photos and NO ads.
Having received 6 issues now, I am very impressed with NG Little Kids. Each issue is 24 pgs long, of which 19 of them containing high quality photos (as opposed to drawings). It is packed with activities: a page or two on questioning animal behavior, figuring out rhymes, finding differences and similarities, naming close-up shots, matching big and small items, counting,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not much to it
My daughter (3 1/2) really likes this magazine. As another reviewer said, the content is great. The only problem is, there's not enough of it. It's a small magazine, and it takes us about 20 minutes to go through it. It needs to either be meatier, or more frequent than every 2 months! Even with re-reading, it doesn't last very long before she's memorized the whole thing...

Having received 6 issues now, I am very impressed with NG Little Kids. Each issue is 24 pgs long, of which 19 of them containing high quality photos (as opposed to drawings). It is packed with activities: a page or two on questioning animal behavior, figuring out rhymes, finding differences and similarities, naming close-up shots, matching big and small items, counting, solving a maze, finding animals within a scene, and imagining what an animal in a photo is thinking. Not only is there a short article detailing one animal but usually there is also one on a society culture (i.e. Africa, China, India), which most kids' magazines lack. A few pages are dedicated to science exploration, craft, and cooking. Every issue also has six tear-out cards of animals with an animal fact on the back of each. Even though it is geared to toddlers and preschoolers, this magazine interests all of my kids, ages 6, 4 and 1 (but really the best for ages 3-4). Best of all, except for a tear-out subscription postcard, there are no ads (unlike NG Kids). This magazine is better than National Wildlife Federation's Wild Animal Baby. As mentioned in a previous review, buy it direct from National Geographic to save money. The only thing I can think of to improve the magazine is to have more issues per year and maybe sturdier/thicker pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Magazine for Kids - But Way Too Expensive on Amazon, September 8, 2007
This review is from: National Geographic Little Kids (Magazine)
This is a new magazine from National Geographic - my 3 year old loves it! The photography and illustrations are a step above most magazines aimed at toddlers. Plus, there are tear-out cards in every issue.

My only major complaint is that Amazon is charging way too much for a subscription. On the National Geographic site, you can get it for $15 a year. Don't waste your money here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not much to it, February 5, 2008

It is cheaper on the NG website, which is how I bought it, and I still question whether it will be worth $15 again this year. For $2.50 an issue, I'd like to see more of it! It offers something that Ladybug and Highlights High Five don't, with a focus on nature and science, but I expected more magazine for the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very random, November 24, 2008
This review is from: National Geographic Little Kids (Magazine)
I was a little disappointed in this magazine. The pictures are nice, but the content seems very random. There are activities aimed at the very young (ie. same and different, color recognition) and then there are some complex concepts that can't hold a toddler's attention (ie. match the letter to the picture that starts with it). It is very short for a bi-monthly, and doesn't offer a lot of stories to read -- usually just one about that month's animal. My daughter does like the tear out animal cards in each issue.

We got a subscription to this magazine as a gift for our 5 year-old son. I find it to be of high quality, with a good balance of games and educational articles, with very nice pictures. My only criticism is that it is too easy for our son, even though it is advertised as being designed for preschoolers. But I am making sure to save them for his little brother!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed , Very Little Content!, May 27, 2010
This review is from: National Geographic Little Kids (Magazine)
Just got this in the mail today for my 4 year old. I am suprised to see such a high quality magazine, put out such a low quality "kids" version!

This magazine is writen for 3-6 year olds, but I think it's more suitable for 1-2 year olds. The average length of an "article" in this magazine is 2 pages long (no page turning required), and consists of 3-4 sentences!

The actual size of this magaize of this magazine is about half the size of a normal magazine (it's only 6.5"X 7"). Very thin too, only 24 pages (turn the page 12 times and it's over), and the content is very random!

I called to cancel and they said they would refund the full amount. Would not recommend this to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only 6 issues per year?!, January 28, 2009

You get the same content in Your Big Backyard, and twelve issues for the same price National Geogrpahic Little Kids charges on their website.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's small (and cheaper elsewhere), February 19, 2009

I have to agree with other reviewers - this magazine in really small. And I don't mean that it doesn't have many pages, although that's also true. Its dimensions are also small - around 4" X 6". It's just a really small magazine in every sense. My daughter does enjoy it, but for the price, you'd expect something that had both more and larger pages. In addition, as other reviewers have noted, you can find it cheaper at places other than Amazon (as of Feb 2009).

If you want some cool nature pics and games for your kid and have a few bucks to blow, go ahead. But don't get it from Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really, really cute!, November 7, 2008
This review is from: National Geographic Little Kids (Magazine)
My MIL got a subscription to this for my son and it is just adorable. As others have said, the content is great but it's very short. I am glad he gets it but I don't know If I would dish out $25 a year for it, but as long as she wants to get it for him, that's fine by me. :D

Actually, my son (age 4.5) uses it as a bathroom book. It's hilarious to see him sitting on the potty in deep thought while reading these. So for short sessions like that, they're great but don't expect them to entertain your child for any amount of time. It's also handy to keep 2 or 3 in the car (they're fairly sturdy) to look at in restaurants or dr. offices etc.

So, all in all cute but not completely worth the money IMO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!, May 16, 2011
This review is from: National Geographic Little Kids (Magazine)
As an educator and mom of a 3 year old, this magazine rocks! My 3 1/2 year old LOVES it! It is highly engaging. She loves to read it over and over and at this age, and as a developing reader, that is what she should be doing. The age range (3-6) is actually perfect. This product is not meant to send you kid to a corner and keep them quiet for an hour. There are fabulous activities that build reading readiness and help emerging reader. To get the full value out of the magazine make sure you are reading it with your child, and using the guides (such as the questions) to interact and educate your child! Also, there are NO ADS in this magazine....ther is a subscription card, but that is easily taken out and thrown away or passed on to a friend!
