Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Hop from one continent to the next without breaking your stride with this handy National Geographic stainless steel men's automatic watch. It features a rotating bezel emblazoned with major cities from around the world, which you can set to correspond to the 24-hour markings on the exterior of the dial. This automatic watch is powered by your own kinetic energy, and it offers a 40-hour power reserve (which is tracked at the top of the dial via a half-moon subdial). The black dial also includes luminous bar hour markers, luminous baton hands (with seconds hand), and a date subdial. Other features include a scratch-resistant mineral crystal and water resistance to 100 meters (330 feet)--offering protection from accidental splashes as well suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and light recreational diving.

An automatic (or self-winding) watch is fitted with a device (rotor) that automatically winds the spring by using the force of gravity. It needs no battery, but it will stop if you have been physically inactive for an extended period of time--as long as you're moving, the watch will stay powered. Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the self-winding mechanism in 1770. It worked on the same principle as a modern pedometer, and was designed to wind as the owner walked.

4.0 out of 5 stars National Geographic NG06GKBS Automatic, May 22, 2009
This review is from: National Geographic Men's NG06GKBS Watch (Watch)
This watch is an attention getter. The hands and lettering contrast nicely with the dial, and the 21,000 beat second hand is very visable. The all metal band has a nice finish and compliments the watch.

Functionally, the watch has the standard hour, minute, and second hands along with two additional hands on sub-dials for date and 40 hour power reserve. There is a moving inner-chapter ring that displays the time against a settable outer-chapter ring listing twenty different cities. So the watch is busy, but pleasantly so. There is a presentation back that displays the sutomatic rotor and the balance wheel when the rotor is not blocking it.

There is no stem-wind function. The watch requires some arm-movement to get it going from an unwound condition and so it is best to have a watch-winder device if you're not going to wear it all the time becuase setting all the dials to be in synchronization is a bit tedious.

The watch has proven to be a good timekeeper, staying easily withing it's 15 second/day accuracy claim, but only if the reserve wind is greater than 10 hours.

Putting all this into perspective, this watch makes a great entry into the mechanical watch realm for the collector looking for the best bang for the buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Watch, March 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: National Geographic Men's NG06GKBS Watch (Watch)
I've had this watch for about 3 Months now and was drawn to it by its sleek metal finish and man-like appearance.

Its a fantastic watchm it feel sturdy, solid and it is a pleasure to wear - it seems to mould around your wrist. And lets be honest, its a looker - the clean crystal face to its shiny metal finish to its large face. And all this you get knowing that you NEVER have to replace the battery! One bug bear I have with it, is the date dial as some small numbers on it, but I just have to look carefully at which digit the hand it pointing to.

I would recommend this watch in terms of quality and in my opinion style.
