This review is from: National Geographic November 2009 Egypt's Animal Mummies
The cover photo on this issue is about mummified animals in Egypt. The associated article, "Animals Everlasting," tells of an Egyptian farmer uncovering a mass grave in 1888 containing hundreds of thousands of mummified cats. Some of the linen-wrapped cats had gilded faces. Others have found shrews, rams, bulls, gazelles, dogs, ibises, lions, crocodiles, hawks, fish, and scarab beetles.
Votive objects were offered up during yearly festivals; sometimes pilgrims were cheated with cheaper animal substitutes, beautiful wrappings around nothing but mud. Natron, a salt that absorbs moisture and fat, was the key drying agent.
