Book Description

September 1, 2001
National Geographic: The Wildlife Photographs is organized by habitat. For each habitat community - desert, ocean, forest, savanna - the book presents photographs that render a sense of place, people in the field facing the photographic & physical hardships of extreme conditions, and a variety of wildlife of every description. Organization by habitat allows the author to present the very different challenges both for wildlife and for journalists in each environment, and the chapters tell dramatically different stories. By displaying entire ecological communities, we show the interrelationships among the creatures that inhabit a particular place. The delicacy of these relationships and the associated conservation implications are obvious but the conservation message is offered with subtlety. National Geographic has expanded the world's understanding and appreciation of wildlife and this book tells that story, displaying it with high drama. To complement the broad geographic approach to each chapter, sidebar features focus on individual photographers at work in the habitals of individual wildlife species.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

National Geographic: The Wildlife Photographs has just what we expect from the National Geographic Society: unforgettable images of animals in the wild. Page after page takes viewers into the private world of animals and reveals such sights as a dense furry nest of bats, the perfectly etched feathers on the back of a bald eagle's head, cheetah cubs dining on an impala, or a bleak forest of garden eels at the bottom of the Red Sea. The book is not without a mission: essays on habitat and endangered ecosystems underscore how precious the lives of these creatures are.

From Booklist

Editors at National Geographic present a collection of more than 170 wildlife images from a magazine justifiably famous for its photography. Since 1903 National Geographic has published pioneering photos of rare animals, which accompany stories about the environments they inhabit. This eclectic collection gathers these photos into five chapters organized by habitat. Temperate forests are the first subject, highlighting animals such as loons, grizzlies, and snapping turtles. Lions, blackbucks, and African wild dogs are featured in a chapter on the open country, and sharks, mantas, and manatees fill the oceans section. Tropical forests present photos of quetzals, tigers, and blue morpho butterflies, and polar bears, reindeer, and penguins are pictured at the ends of the earth. A sidebar portfolio in each section features the work of one photographer well known for his or her images of animals from the featured habitat. Mitchell's text gives information on each region, discussing the environment, the politics of conservation, and a profile of the featured photographer. This beautiful book will be welcome in large photography collections. Nancy Bent

2.0 out of 5 stars Great photographers,photographs - VERY POOR reproductions!, March 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: National Geographic: The Wildlife Photographs (Hardcover)
I used to enjoy everything from NG - magazine (still very good) books etc., however this book continues to show the NGS as it slides downhill. The photographic reproduction is marginal at best (as in so many of their latest offerings) where great, often heroic photos are shown soft or seemingly out of focus. The paper stock is awful. This could have been a wonderful book, and it winds up as almost an insult to past and present Geographic photographers. I'd gladly pay ten dollars more if they could work to improve it. I suppose that's what happens when a non-profit organization moves to a for-profit one!
