5.0 out of 5 stars Guide To Scenic Byways
I purchased this book as I already owned and use the 2nd edition. While I live in Indiana and there are not many scenic byways in this state, I really purchased the book for an annual "Two For The Road" trip I take with my car buddy Larry Cox. The maps for our week long adventures are usually based upon this book and another reference book that I have purchased called...

3.0 out of 5 stars Get To Know Our Country
This is a handy little book to take along on a road trip. It contains many drives and points of interest around the country. I wish that it had more descriptive narrative to entice me to go to a place. It is quite dry and lacks interesting details that I look for in a travel book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guide To Scenic Byways, June 28, 2007
This review is from: National Geographic Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways, 3d Ed. (National Geographic's Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways) (Paperback)
I purchased this book as I already owned and use the 2nd edition. While I live in Indiana and there are not many scenic byways in this state, I really purchased the book for an annual "Two For The Road" trip I take with my car buddy Larry Cox. The maps for our week long adventures are usually based upon this book and another reference book that I have purchased called "the most scenic drives in America: 120 spectacular road trips". I recommend that you purchase both books, however, if you can only afford one, purchase most scenic drives in america as they have more details about stops along each byway. So while scenic drives is a great book to plan, the national geographic guide is easy to take along, carry on the plane, etc. It is an excellent reference book. I won't leave home without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A simply excellent travel guide for America, April 30, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: National Geographic Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways, 3d Ed. (National Geographic's Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways) (Paperback)
Even with exorbitant fuel prices, America is still the best bargain for travel bargain. This book proves it, over and over. The photography is simply superb, all in color, and gives the reader a wonderful opportunity to anticipate what might be found along each route discussed. While certain routes, e.g., Woodward Avenue out of Detroit, going north, would not have made my list, this is a minor quibble, since the Guide is intended for folks who have NOT been on the highways discussed.

The writing style is clear, informative, and easily read by anyone. The book is very well organized, and the remarkable photography closely follows the text.

In short, whether you intend to visit one state, or several, this book is an absolute must in terms of planning your trip. It not only describes the routes themselves, but attractions that closely border them. I have probably traveled thirty or forty of the routes described. In almost every instance, after reading this book, I wish I had had it with me when I made the journey.

This book earns a definite five-stars. It is very nearly a perfect travel guide to a lot of America. Even if your travels are confined to an armchair, you will enjoy this book endlessly for what it will teach you about America's geography and history.

Highly recommended, but don't loan it out.

Bought this as my motorcycle travel companion. Compact book, but includes so many great roads with good comments. Exactly what I needed.

I have other books of this kind and this is by far the best. It is a great size for taking along. What I like best about it is the places to visit off the scenic drive itself. Making for a trip in a trip

This book was great. We drove many of the roads mentioned in this book while on a vacation which included 4 national parks and 5 states. It was a really great trip. The byway scenery between the parks were very picturesque. Thanks National Geographic! I doubt we would have found some of these Highways and Byways by ourselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I would have seen this updated version!, August 5, 2009
This review is from: National Geographic Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways, 3d Ed. (National Geographic's Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways) (Paperback)
My husband and I just completed a two week road trip from Michigan to Oregon and back. An earlier edition of this book was the most used of the travel guides I had with me. It is easy to read, has clear maps, and points out many places we wouldn't have seen or noticed had we not had this to consult. Occasionally I found the directions to a location did not have enough details resulting in some guessing on our parts and I frequently found the route was explained in the opposite direction we were traveling (!), but those were small details compared to the huge asset this book was as we saw the sights. Having this more current edition would probably have been even better than the older one we had! Accompanied by another National Geographic book, THE INTERSTATES: CROSSING AMERICA we were entertained by the information shared in the books and by the sights we chose to see.

National Geographic travel books never disappoint. Each scenic drive description is brief out of necessity, but they might prompt the reader to seek more information elsewhere for targeted areas. Not really suitable for armchair travel though.

My wife and I really enjoyed having this book on our two road trips this summer! GREAT info, easy to use, well written. I can't think of a good reason to discourage the purchase of this book, if it appeals to you.
