Activating Your Service:
Simply make a call in order to activate your Talk Abroad™ International SIM card. Your service is valid for 12 months from the day of activation. Recharging your SIM card (adding talk time), extends the validity for another 12 months from the day you add the credit. Please note that while the service does work in North America (in areas with GSM coverage), the service is intended for use overseas and therefore, placing a call from your handset in North America is expensive.

Your Phone Number:
You will have a UK phone number, regardless of where you are traveling. Your phone number will be clearly marked on the SIM card packaging.

Checking Your Credit:
You may check your credit at any time by dialing 187 on your handset. This is a free service. You will receive a text message with your current credit. You will also receive an SMS text message after each call notifying you of your current credit.

Adding Talk Time to Your SIM Card:
You can add talk time at any time - together with your purchase as well as prior to and during your trip. Simply call Cellular Abroad 24/7 on our toll free number and we will immediately add talk time for you using your account information already on file or an alternative credit card. Additional call credit is $29 for 30 minutes of talk time (for most popular destinations). Each time you add call credit or "recharge" your account, you will extend your service life for an additional 12 months from the date of the recharge. Previous call credit will accumulate to your new call credit.

I bought this sim card because it seemed like a good concept and as a National Geographic Society member, I trusted that they had done their homework before putting their name on a product of this sort. Unlike some other reviewers, I read the description and was aware of the call-back feature. In practice, it worked well enough in the UK, but in the Netherlands, it could only receive calls. When I tried to make a call, I received a message: "you are forbidden to make this call." And no callback. I ended up buying a Dutch sim card for 10 euros and it worked fine.
On my return to the US, I went back to the Amazon website and got permission to return the card, hoping to get a partial refund (I obviously did not expect a full refund, since the card worked fine in the UK). I sent it back and now, 2 months later, have not received a refund, nor has the card been returned to me. You would think that if the company felt I was not entitle to a refund, they would at least have the decency to return the card to me, since it must have had at least $30 of credit on it.
The bottom line is that in most situations you are much better off buying local sim cards abroad. Apparently the attractive idea of using a single sim card throughout much of the world is difficult to implement, and in any event this company cannot be trusted to deal honestly with its customers.

From the manual: "The Talk Abroad service is a 'callback' service. This means that in order for you to complete a call, you must dial the destination phone number and then wait for the Talk Abroad network to call you back."
Not what I expected. It would have been helpful had I known that up front.

I tried to use this SIM in Venice, but got the message "emergency calls only". In Munich I consistently got zero bars. I was never able to use it, even to send text messages ("service unavailable") while in Europe. Next time I will buy a local SIM when I arrive. My US AT&T SIM used Vodaphone, and consistently had 5 bars.

I purchased this SIM card, because I needed a phone to work in the following 20 countries during an international road trip. UK, France, Belgium, Luxomburg, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungry, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia. The phone was supposed to work in all these countries, many with free incoming calls. We were not able to get a single text message in or out the entire trip, but still got charged the 60 cents each time we tried. The phone only actually functioned well enough to receive or make calls in the UK, Belgium, and turkey. It dit NOT work in any way shape or form in any of the other countries. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS!!!!! There are several better options out there that actually work

Purportedly a SIM card that works anywhere by finding a local phone company and hooking up for a high premium. I got it for emergency use, but when I had an emergency in Argentina this NatGeo SIM card was completely useless. Could not make a local or international call. Could not receive a local or international call. I had tested it in the USA, and it worked OK. Their website's support email, contacted on a Friday, returned an auto-reply that emails were queued for 48 hours before being evaluated, and that I should call the international toll-free number instead. Of course this was impossible, because the SIM card would not permit any calls. Since it was Friday, the email was queued until the following WEDNESDAY, when I got an email that my problem was under review. Since then, NO CONTACT from them even until this present day, over 2 months later. $60 completely wasted. I see now the price has dropped. Don't be fooled. Run away! I tried to put a short, polite version of this negative review on their website, but it was not accepted. It is embarrassing that a respected Mag like NatGeo would associate their name with such garbage. I would avoid any product or service from the "Cellular Abroad" vendor, who uses the NatGeo name for marketing. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!! My rating zero/5

Good website, made it easy to understand how it worked. Easy to "refill" the account with a fresh credit. Good support round the clock. Worked fine in these two countries. FWIW, the cheapest way to do this is to buy a simple used unlocked quad-band GSM cellphone on Ebay for say $35 (find the docs online), insert the SIM that comes with this, and you are ready to call. What a relief to be able to talk to our kid over there. I got this for emergencies and for him to quickly touch base. For longer calls, we used Skype and webcams.

I was very hopeful that this product would ease me through a number of short trips I am taking in the next year or so. But in Milan, Parma, and Padova I got only "emergency only" service. Since I had tested it out before leaving, I thought I would at least be able to use it in the US. But no, in the Philly airport, I got 5 bar service, but T-mobile, the carrier, seemed to think I needed web service, and kept asking me to create some kind of profile.
