5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for your visit, September 16, 2009
This review is from: National Geographic Traveler: Beijing (Paperback)
National Geographic Traveler produces nice solid guides with good overviews and selections for history and culture. This isn't so much a guide to lodging and restaurants, but rather a guide that highlights historic sites and cultural aspects that make a city or an area uniquely flavorful.

This guide book covers Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen, Xuanwu, Chaoyang, and Haidian districts as well as information on The Great Wall and excursions south. Maps of each area make navigating simple. The last 30 pages has some suggestions for dining, lodging and the like.

If you want a guidebook that focuses more on history rather than night clubs, this is a good choice!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good basic guide, November 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One caveat about this guide: the maps are not always 100% correct. Buildings are on opposite sides of the street (Legation Quarter) for example. Also, if the book suggests taking a bus, check out the metro/subway map first. To get to the Summer Palace you can go straight by subway, but all the guide books we had said to take a bus. To be fair, this book is still full of a lot of good information and lots of idea for places to see. A good choice, but do buy a GOOD Beijing map.
