This was the best picture book for DC. VERY detailed maps and great descriptions/history of monuments. Excellent museum guide focusing on the "must see" exhibits in whatever museum. Minimal hotle/restaurant descriptions, but for that I got Fodor's guide. BEAUTIFUL rich color photos.

Weak Index,
This review is from: National Geographic Traveler: Washington D.C. (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
We bought this guide to provide weekend ideas. We are residents of the Metro Washington Area, so thought this would be a handy guide. However, we were quite disappointed with the index. Few items are cross indexed - so the Navy Memorial is not listed under Navy, but under the US Navy Memorial. Want to find the American Art Museum? Can't find it in the Index under American Art or even Art. You will find it under Smithsonian Americal Art Museum. Places appear to be only list in the index under their full official name - which you have to know to find it. Want to visit the FBI building? Not even in the guide.

I think these Nat Geo books are the best. Not for hotels or restaurants, but outstanding for deiscovering sights that appeal to you with their fantastic photos of each place they review.
