Product Description

The National Geographic Guide to State Parks of the United States is the one book I would like to have if I were driving around the country on vacation. Nominated for inclusion in this book by the 50 state parks directors, this stunning group of 200-plus state parks presents the diversity and beauty of these accessible gems. From Florida to Alaska, from the white water at Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania, to the dunes of Pink Coral Sand Dunes, Utah, from the 6-acre Iao Valley to the 204,000-acre Baxter, these parks represent the best cultural and natural areas protected within our state parks' system. From free to affordable, the state parks appeal to the day-visitor or the weekend escapist alike. Of the state parks' 25,000 miles of trails and recreation, the authors have selected favorites for hiking and biking, horseback riding, and wildflower gazing as well as ample opportunities for the birdwatcher or rock climber, the wildlife observer or the amateur archaeologist. The guide features more than 200 gorgeous, color photographs that capture the splendor of the parks, insider tips from state parks staff that are invaluable planning tools, and 32 easy-to-use maps that highlight sites, trails and campgrounds, as well as information on recreational activities, camping, and lodging. This is a very informative book for the material covered.

This guide would have been helpful if it just listed ALL the state parks for each state, and maybe elaborated on some.

The layout of this guide is exactly like the National Geographic Guide to the National Parks.

I've purchased several guidebooks from National Geographic, but this was my first purchase of their State Parks guide. Please note that this guide DOES NOT cover every state park in the United States. This guide contains 215 parks, picked by state park directors. The layout of this guide is exactly like the National Geographic Guide to the National Parks. There are hundreds of beautiful photographs and maps of certain state parks covered. The guide covers all 50 states, with at least 3 parks in each state. The parks are broken down by region in the book: New England, Middle Atlantic, Great Lakes, Central Plains, South Central, Southwest, The Rockies, Northwest, and Far West. Every park covered has a nice photograph with detailed information on sites to see, hiking trails, camping, lodging, etc. Some parks have historical information and insider tips from park staff. I've visited the parks listed here in California, but I now have several trips planned to visit several state parks in nearby states I didn't know about. Overall, this is an informative guide with a nice layout and I found it to be a good read as well.

Surprisingly and disappointingly weak. It is a guide to an average of four state parks per state, which qualifies as a good example of how not to be comprehensive or encyclopedic. OK if you are just passing through and need to experience some highlights, but no real variety or selection. Weakest part of all is lack of adequate maps. It would have been very easy to have a tiny thumbnail map to show, with each park's section, where it is, much like birding guides do for what a given bird's distribution is. After looking at this book, one still has to get the real picture and details from the much more adequate state park web sites, and internet mapping sites.

While planning a 3 month cross country camping trip I ordered the National Geographic guides for National Parks and Scenic Highways before the State Parks guide was available. Now, surfing the many, many parks listed on the various state park websites, I realized this guide might simplify my selection. Since I am leaving almost immediately I bought my copy at a local bookstore and am delighted. The guide highlighted state parks along my route so combined with visits to National Parks I can camp across the country except for visits with family and friends along the way.

Listing only four or five choice parks for each state removes the cluttered and uninformed options one gets searching directly on the state websites. Having previously camped or driven through but not camped at a number of the guide's selections I trust their judgement on the rest.

I agree with one of the other reviewers. This guide would have been helpful if it just listed ALL the state parks for each state, and maybe elaborated on some. But they didn't do that. They picked a handful, and in some states, not even that! In California they listed 6. That's it! And they didn't even do that great of a job on those 6! Photos and commentary. Who cares! I wanted to know what is offered at each park, the location, fees maybe, whether or not my 18 ft trailer can stay there, etc. My opinion, don't bother!

Guide is great for what it has, however it has very few parks listed. For example there are only 4 parks listed for MO. Maybe they are just showing what they determine are the best parks. The info is detailed with great pictures and glossy pages, however, I was looking for something with a more detailed list so that we could open a book and find a nearby park to camp in while traveling.

Very disappointed as the book is not all inclusive. The staff selected only certain parks. There were many parks we visited that most certainly are five star parks and most worthy of visiting. Again, greatly disappointed.

a little disappointed in the quantity of parks written about. the book itself is small and you can get more info by going on line and checking out each state individually.

Though used, the book was in very good condition and was received promptly. This is a very informative book for the material covered. The book however, only covers specific locations, and is not as inclusive as I'd have liked. Though it does give site specific very localized maps of the area the parks are in, there is no overall U.S. or state map showing the locations of the parks. This would have been very helpful to include. Overall I'd rate it a 7.5-8 for information. I'd order the book again, not unhappy with it, but did have to order a road atlas to accompany it for all the information I wanted. It would only have added a few more pages to the book to make it a complete tomb.
