Perfect for Children (and adults),

This review is from: National Geographic United States Atlas for Young Explorers: Updated Edition (Hardcover)
This is a really nice atlas and gives lots of information, but not so much as to be overwhelming for the 9-12 year-old. I especially appreciated the 2-page spreads of the United States at the beginning of the book, showing topographical features, time zones, territorial growth, federal lands, and more. A glossary, including 2-letter state abbreviations, and a comprehensive index top it off. A very nice atlas even for adults.

My sister was going on her first trip to the East Coast. She was traveling with her husband, 10 year old daughter and 16 year old son and wanted a book that would give them all an overview of the areas they'd be traveling through. After the trip, she reported that the entire family really enjoyed the wealth of information in this Atlas. There was enough detail to be useful, but not so much as to be overwhelming. She also said it wasn't too advanced for her daughter, but yet not too childish for the teen.

This atlas is an attractive publication containing a historical map of the original colonies and westward expansion in addition to the conventional maps. Lots of facts are available, which may be useful for map reading and learning current information in a historical unit. The current maps show photos and provide substantive material about each state. The teacher may want to use this book as a classroom reference.

A little too big for the school bag, but a great resource for home or school on everything to do with the United States.
