5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Atlas for Us, October 9, 2008
This review is from: National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers, Third Edition (Hardcover)
We are homeschoolers and were looking for an atlas to accompany our geography curriculum. I borrowed this particular book from the public library. We were so impressed, we decided to purchase our own copy. I felt the price was great for something like this - oversized, beautiful color photographs, satellite images; political and physical maps of each continent; just about anything you could ever want from an atlas. The text is geared towards students - my own children are 9 and 11.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you would expect from National Geographic, July 3, 2008

This review is from: National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers, Third Edition (Hardcover)
I got this for my twin girls who are in Third Grade, and they really enjoy it. It has the excellent National Geographic maps and a lot of information packed into its 192 pages. It also has links to their webpage spread throughout for an interactive experience. This atlas is a great resource for young explorers curious about the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, poor choice of font, June 25, 2009

I bought this book for my 6-year old who is very interested in geography based on reviews I read. Overall the book is excellent in terms of its content, maps, and photographs. In retrospect, it is a little advanced for a 6-year old but I decided to keep it as she would grow into it. The one thing I did find disappointing, however, is the choice of font & font color. Some of the information provided is in tiny font; I guess the goal was to pack as much content as possible on the pages. The bigger disappointment is their choice of font color. Every continent uses a different color and some of them are so faded and light in color that they're almost hard to read (particular North America, South America, some of the Asia paragraphs, and even some of the front section on the earth). What were they thinking?! How did they not notice! Given the excellent quality of the content, I really wish they had not compromised pragmatism for creativity on something as basic as the font.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent atlas for elementary and middle grade students, March 15, 2010

This review is from: National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers, Third Edition (Hardcover)
I have been looking for a good atlas to use with my 5-year-old daughter and of all the ones I've browsed through, this seems the best. There is a how-to guide at the beginning of the book which provides useful guidelines on how to maximize use of this atlas, and the bonus is that this atlas is also interactive - there's yellow-and-black icons on most pages which lead to a website that allows children to explore the world (there are videos, music, and games). This site also provides more in-depth information which can be very useful for school projects, and there are maps which can be downloaded and colored. All in all ,the interactive features are excellent and highly engaging!

The atlas itself covers the continents, i.e. North America; South America; Europe; Asia; Africa; Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania; and, Antarctica. The oversized feature of this book allows for easy perusal (without having to strain one's eyes) of the maps. The maps themselves are appropriately detailed, with physical and political maps represented alongside each other for convenient reference. There are also maps of natural disasters, world religions, the solar system, the ocean floors, population, etc. The back of the book contains an index for easy reference. There's also a flags of the world section with brief statistics regarding each country. Excellent reference and value for money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful layout, January 17, 2010

This was purchased by a grandmother as an educational follow up to an earlier request for a globe, which was also a hit but kind of one dimensional. The Atlas for Young Explorers has wonderful pictures and illustrations as well as interspersing text and computer link information. I was a little concerned about the reading level before actually seeing the atlas since my grandchild is in early grammar school but a very good reader. It is so interesting that opening it up usually means 30+ minutes of focused information that is generally read to the whole family (or anyone in the near vicinity). This is a very good value that I can see being a useful tool throughout all grammar school. If you have a child or grandchild interested in the natural world, I highly recommend this product.

I found the book to be colorful & interesting, something that's necessary to keep a young one's interest. He talks about going exploring and is interested in animals. It was put on his wish list so I thought it would be a great gift he can enjoy and learn from for years. He was very excited when he opened it. I am very happy with the purchase.
I recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever Atlas for Students, December 23, 2010

This review is from: National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers, Third Edition (Hardcover)
I carefully selected our main atlas for homeschooling, as I had several used ones I had collected and was unable to find something I really liked. Most for kids were either too cartoonish, didn't contain enough real life information, or were simply unclear. Then I stumbled upon this atlas and immediately knew this was the perfect one for us.

The maps are clear and easy to understand, the accompanying information is pertinent and interesting for our middle schoolers to read, and the larger size allows more information to be included and text to be a tad bit larger.

We use this atlas for everything, when we are reading books we pull it out to see where in the world something ocurred, we find information on regional industry, we can see terrain and oceans labeled well.

Every student should own one, avery homeschool should have at least 1!
