Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Ever since Jaws, we've had at least a glimmer of fear in our minds whenever we venture into the ocean. Nobody wants to be shark food, and the author of that classic horror story goes looking for the ultimate sea monster in National Geographic's Great White Shark. Peter Benchley, assigned with undersea photographer David Doubilet to report on the reality underlying these ancient animals and their interactions with humans, travels to Australia to meet with experts and keep an eye peeled for sharks. He joins attack survivor Rodney Fox to observe and photograph the beautiful-from-a-distance fish up close, hears tales of attacks and near misses, and takes part in a dissection of an 18-foot great white that the squeamish might want to pass up. The program's visuals are stunning; the viewer gets a real sense of being at sea and in the presence of great strength. The overly anxious will find some relief at the end, when a short segment called "Shark Defense" explores novel methods of attack prevention being researched and tested with some success. --Rob Lightner

From the Back Cover

Mythic, monstrous...misunderstood. Now, on the 25th anniversary of the hit film Jaws, National Geographic embarks on a voyage of breakthrough discoveries that will forever alter our view of the infamous creature once labeled "the perfect killing machine."

- Join the ultimate great white expedition, featuring Jaws creator Peter Benchley, famed underwater photographer David Doubilet, and Great White Shark attack survivor-turned-advocate, Rodney Fox.
- Witness amazing great white shark behaviors, including never-before-seen footage of explosive, air-borne "breaching" attacks.
- Experience the breathless fear of a diver trapped on the sea bottom for over four hours by a hungry great white.

Also includes "Shark Defense" -- a 15 minute bonus program.

With cinematography that takes you literally into the gaping mouth of this fearsome killer, it's a surprising new look at one of the largest, most fascinating predators ever to swim the seas -- or haunt our imaginations.
