Many of the secrets and esoteric mysteries of World War II will never be revealed. Yet many of these untold stories are just as important as any of the most significant events of the war--whether it be Dunkirk, D-Day, or Pearl Harbor. National Geographic's absorbing documentary,
Untold Stories of WWII, goes back in time to tell the story of meaningful, yet somehow forgotten, events that changed the course of the war. The first--and arguably the most fascinating--is the story of three intrepid Norwegian resistance fighters who took flight from their occupied homeland to become a "Special Forces Executive" for the Allies. Their story is told in conjunction with a 1949 film portraying their mission, in which they play themselves. Their clandestine duty was to infiltrate a heavy-water factory and single-handedly destroy the inventory of heavy water, which the Allies considered to be the Nazis' first step toward building a functional nuclear device. The factory, situated on the edge of a cliff in the Norwegian fjords, was impregnable from the sky and heavily guarded from the ground. Suffice to say, they succeeded in their mission, but not without loss and the odd scary moment or two. The surviving team members' lucid accounts also add a profound resonance to what they achieved.
Other, equally gripping recollections involve the story of the Thunder Gods or, as they are commonly known to us, kamikaze pilots, the brave, impassioned few who volunteered themselves as human bombing machines in a last-ditch effort to destroy the American fleet in the Pacific. These and other stories show us that the outcome of the war was far from inevitable. --Jeremy Storey
