Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Volcanologist Maurice Krafft believed that "people are much more curious about hell than about paradise." Krafft and his wife Katia certainly were: the French scientists shared a lifelong fascination with volcanoes that took them all over the world to film eruptions until a hot ash flow in Japan claimed their lives in 1991. In this National Geographic special, made two years before their death, the Kraffts' breathtaking films and photographs allow us to share this fascination from the safe distance of our living rooms. Among the more memorable scenes is a bleak black volcanic landscape punctuated by the lava's red fireworks and by the Kraffts in their silver asbestos suits, looking more like astronauts on some distant planet than scientists glimpsing the fire of the Earth's core. The pair's enthusiasm for their work is evident in their film footage and spills over into the video's interview segments, making Volcano a fitting, if unintentional, tribute to the Kraffts and to the volcanoes to which they dedicated their lives. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

As a teacher of ninth grade science, I fully recommend this video. It is beautifully done! It does a wonderful job of showing students the realities of volcanoes that one just can't see in a textbook. It holds the students' attention and it helps to spark inquiry and interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars Volcano!, July 1, 2011
This review is from: National Geographic's Volcano [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This was not the correct video that the title box represented. It makes me hesitant to purchase any other videos.

A wonderful mix of asthetic appreciation an scientific insight. The Krafts are (were),truelovers of volcanoes for their power, beauty and awe-inspiring scientific observability. A must see!
