Book Description

10 and upGates Family Mystery
Matthew Gates's older brother Thomas is convinced a treasure lies hidden with someone or something named Charlotte. But Matthew wants treasure that is more accesible. So, when in 1848, the first rumors of gold in California start spreading, Matthew eagerly leaves his family behind and goes West to seek his fame and fortune.

A year later, Matthew is part of the original Forty-Niners, with a claim and no money--yet. But then he overhears a fellow miner discussing odd glyphs found in his mine and Matthew's family instincts kick in. He sets out to see if the glyphs lead to something bigger than all the gold in California and in the process stumbles upon a group of Forty-Niners who will stop at nothing to claim a fortune.

Set during some of the most important moments in American history, the Gates Family Mysteries follow the ancestors of Benjamin Franklin Gates (immortalized by Nicholas Cage) as they search for treasure and strive to clear their family name.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed It, December 27, 2008
This review is from: National Treasure: A Gates Family Mystery #4: Westward Bound (Paperback)
They gave the wrong describtion of the book.
In 1848 James Munroe Gates wants to escape his lonley life at his family's businesses, and prove to his family his worth. His chance comes when letters from his aunt, who lives in the untamed west, arrive and have mysterious verses writen in code. James is entranced by the clues, and though he despices his family's trait of treasure-hunting, he sees his chance to get away from his life. Tagging along with him is an old family friends's son, Seasmus Poole, and a runaway aristocrat. The three are detirmined to go West, but soon the aristocrats family is hot on their trail, willing to do anything, even murder, to get the runaway back in their hands.
Now, the trio must evade the murderous group, travel west to their fortunes, and follow the clues to the most unlikely of treasures. Its a really good book, I was pleased that the treasure was different from gold and silver. I hope people can enjoy it.
