For Bukowski and Ray Carver fans, but Graham is Very Much His Own Writer,

This review is from: The National Virginity Pledge: Short Stories and Other Lies (Paperback)
I love the ugly/beauty of Graham's characters, the precise details of their lives, the richness of their rage and lust. I love the integrity with which Graham caresses these hopeless souls, the people in his book's world. Human life is so miraculous and so sordid and wrong and beautiful and Graham knows this and spews this knowledge onto every page. This is fine, fine stuff. I highly recommend it. These stories will stay with you, long after you finish reading them, like a treasured scar after a honest scrape.

These carefully and often playfully wrought, muscular stories capture sometimes ugly but always self-redeeming currents of American culture.
