The Nations allows players to complete their goals in two different ways: While some warriors will try conquering the world in a more conventional destructive manner, not all players want follow this path. For this reason, the developers included a new option that allows peaceful players to follow a more nonviolent approach to uniting all tribes and nations.
Each nation is now made up of several different tribes. The player takes control of one of the tribes, hoping to satisfy each individual's needs and demands within the tribe. Once this has been accomplished, members of other tribes, enticed by the player's leadership, will flock to join the player's tribe. An especially enjoyable consequence may occur when an entire tribe decides to give the player total control. Use diplomacy to build alliances and exchange technologies with various tribes and nations. Acquire money by trade and use it to build your tribe and keep members happy. Can't handle peaceful coexistence? Then employ a conquer-the-world strategy and see where it gets you.
The developer has implemented an intelligent AI system that allows your subjects to think. Once the player has decided that wood needs to be chopped, lumberjacks will immediately follow the players wish, unless, of course, they are taking a break, sleeping, or are just unhappy with their living conditions.

A Really Great Game,
By Gary L. Buckner (Marion, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Nations (CD-ROM)
Without a doubt, JoWoods, The Nations, is one of the best games I have ever played. It is a cinch to learn how to play. It contains great graphics, (the music isn't bad either,) realistic sounds and,if you have trouble or, just want to ask a question or comment on something, there is two forums in which you can do this. You will also recieve an answer to your questions, either on the web page or via email. This means a lot to those of us who have spent fifty bucks or more on a game, only to find that something was wrong and there was no where to ask about the problem or, you never got a response to your inquiry. Whichever race you elect to play, Amazon, Pimmon, or Saijaka, I think most gammers will agree that this game is a lot of fun, isn't really all that hard or simple to win or lose and, a game you never really tire of playing time after time. Now that the publishers have given some much needed Cheat Codes, this makes the game even more fun than it was. I give this one five stars for excellence and, in my opinion, there isn't many games out there which can hold a candle to The Nations.

So far, I have really enjoyed playing this game. The only problem that I have had with it was the first time that I tried to play. It would just shut off after clicking on the "play the nations" button in the menu. I went to the website for help, and decided to download the three patches for this game. After I installed the patches, I tried to play again, and it worked the first time! This game is great, and especially for the price, but I definitely recommend downloading the patches.

The game looks really great, the only downfall to it is I have not discovered a MANUAL. I couldn't find one in paper form, nor in pdf form on the cd. I contacted Jowood who wrote the game, and didn't get much help at all.
